Hi everyone! My name is Louise. I am a little more than one month post op...and I've lost 38lbs so far. I have about 70 more to go. I have a great support system in place with my husband, kids and my boss...but can never have enough support...especially considering none of them have had this. I am looking forward to talking with people who have been banded...and helping to encourage others that are thinking about it.

the first fill helps a little bit. I am hoping the second one will help the most. My first adjustment was 4cc in a 10cc band. I do find a few things more difficult...like a muffin or bread...that I had no problem with prior to the adjustment...

but I do feel fuller.

You will find when you are at restriction that you don't want bread at all...like ever! I have NO DESIRE for bread as I cannot eat much and so what I do eat I want Protein - I crave it! So crazy as I was literally a carbaholic before surgery! YAHOO!

You are doing wonderfully - keep up the good work! I love this forum as everyone has different experiences, ideas, and advice....it is very helpful and encouraging!

Hi Louise,

Congrats on having the surgery and doing so well after it. I am in the very early stages of Lap Band exploration. I have my first consultation with the surgeon and his team on October 23rd.

I was wondering - how did you lose so much weight right after the surgery? I am assuming you haven't been filled yet? My biggest concern is that after surgery, before I am filled, I am going to feel CONSTANTLY hungry and never satisfied. I am relatively confident that I can physically handle the surgery, but my concern is that I am never going to feel satisfied after it. I am fearful of living in a state of perpetual hunger post-op. My understanding is that you are very limited as to what you can eat immediately after surgery, so how did you handle that?

Any advice you or anyone else could offer as I prepare for my consultation would be very helpful.

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,

Honestly...the first few days after the surgery, I had a problem getting all of the shakes in...because I wasn't hungry. I did get hungry towards the end of the first two weeks of shakes...so I did start stage 3 a day early. :D However, once I started the stage 3...I was surprisingly full after meals...even as abbreviated as they were. Even though there is no "fluid" in the band, I think there is still some restriction...due to swelling etc...but I was able to eat anything (within the stage 3 diets) with no problem. Stage 4 was even better...I like my breads, so I experimented with some...I found a 100 calorie "thin sandwich" bread by Arnold that is very good...and I was able to eat sandwiches for lunch...oatmeal for Breakfast instead of eggs all the time...and I have not had a problem.

Now, I have had my first fill (4cc in a 10cc band)...and I have had some problems with doughier foods...muffins, rolls etc...but those thin sandwich breads are calming that craving...and I am still losing weight!

Go for the surgery. You will be very surprised with how you feel afterwards...and rewards are great. I can see my toes without bending over! LOL :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
