Just Starting... Step 1

Recommended Posts

Ok, so i finally decided to start this process. My primar doc has been amazing and supportive. but i am still unsure of the process, how long it takes and what is next. Help! So my doc broke it down into three steps, nutrionist, psych eval and then surgery. So I have my 1st appointment with a nutrionist tomorrow. What can I expect?

BTW does anyone have BSHMO and know the process or requirements?

Thanks and this site is awesome! B)

Congrats on starting the process. i am not familiar with your insurance I have BCBS NJ Direct and they require 6 months with a nutritionist. I just had my surgery yesterday and thre jumping thorugh hoops will hopefully pay off. The psych. evaluation is no big deal. The hardest part is once you ar3e aproved getting all your tests done for the surgery and medical clearance. All docs and insurance are different though. Sorry I know I wasn't much help, but good luck to you.

It was outpatient. My surgery was at 7:30 and I was home by 2:30. The pain has not been bad. Just very sore. The pain meds they give you help a lot. It has been a weird experience, but I am happy with the decision. Plus I have lost 5 pounds in 2 days! I am sure it will go back and forth, but for now it makes me feel better about eating nothing but Jello and broth. LOL Good luck to you.

For me im preop

aug- information session with surgeon i chose.

aug-sept-

had to see pulmonary , cardio , pshy , nutrition

luckly i didnt need any stress tests or sleep tests b/c i am under 30 and low risk. so if you need to have these done then it will slow the process down a lil

now im awaiting to see the surgeon which is monday then im not sure get sent in for approval . which i called bcbs and they said it should take no more that 24 hours to be approved. oh and i have a lap band meeting for preop class

it all depends on the surgeon you see.

i wish you luck!!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
