BobBigBoy 0 Posted September 29, 2010 As I sit here drinking a Rum with Diet tea, I wonder what about drinking after the lap band. I suppose you would not drink as much because the belly in tiny & that you have not had much food to keep you grounded. But I enjoy a drink after work with dinner to help me relax. How will the Band effect this? I know I know Booze are fattening & if your serious you'll stop drinking. :smile2: But I'm curious as to what the band will change with this? I have noticed that since I have been banded I no longer have the desire to drink...I dont know if it's cuz my stomach is smaller and I only want to put good yummy delishious food in it or what but for me I dont worry about alcohol I just dont want it anymore. I don't have problems drinking anything after the band so I don't imagine drinking alcohol would be a problem it goes straight through the band as would any other drink let it be Water, juice or anything else. BeachBabe 0 Posted September 29, 2010 I have always been a big drinker. I peretty much stopped for the first 4 weeks. I now have drinks now and then but not as much. I am counting my calories and have found that alcohol really screws up my count and makes my weight loss slower. I am glad since I was a real drinker before the surgery. I feel good losing weight and now the desire to be thin is more than my need of alcohol. Long story short, booze does not seem to do much to your stomach. It does make me want to eat more though. It does make me want to eat more though. & might you just say to heck with it I'm gonna eat that even though I know its bad for me.. After mentioning that I was having a drink tonight I decided to go ride my new bike for about 3 miles to work off that drink. :smile2:

BetsyB 9 Posted September 29, 2010 My doctor vetoes it for the first year--primarily because he wants his patients to establish completely different eating habits. Alcohol isn't the devil. But it is liquid calories, and the body treats the calories from alcohol differently than it handles other calories; it is much more efficiently converted to body fat. That, and alcohol is a disinhibitor. Catch a buzz, and suddenly the nachos you've done a splendid job of resisting for months start beckoning---and finding their way into your mouth... For me, the issue is tolerance. I eat way less, I weigh way less, and my tolerance is zilch. So a sip or two of my husband's blood Mary (hey--it's a vegetable!) is about all I have room, or tolerance, for. I need to put other things into my stomach to ensure my good health, and the real estate is at a premium--I just don't have room for it.
MaggieB 6 Posted September 29, 2010 I have had a few drinks but most of the time I am feeling too full to drink so I skip it when out with friends.
extraonme 4 Posted September 29, 2010 I am three weeks out and was wondering if a glass of red wine would be bad? I drink socially which means rarely and we never have it in the house. I was at an event and wanted just a glass, but didn't since I wasn't sure the damage I would do. How long did everyone wait before their first glass?
stateofzen 46 Posted September 29, 2010 My husband and I love red wine. We look for good bottles, we enjoy tastings and winery trips, and we like to have the occasional conversation about it. I have no intention of giving up red wine (not to mention all of the health benefits it has). I just won't get to drink as much of it (1 glass instead of 2). The biggest thing for me to adjust to will be to not drink it with food. Agh, it kills me to think I'm not going to be able to enjoy wine/food pairings anymore. Actually, the whole "no drinking with food" restriction was the one thing in all of my surgery materials that made my husband freak out for me
kellyjoiii 19 Posted September 29, 2010 I drink. I get drunk. Lmao. I think they tell you that because of the calories. I do liquor with no calorie or very low calorie mixers...i.e. diet cran, crystal light. No beer or soda for me. Some people's doctors allow it though. I do not drink as often as I did before...used to do the same thing as you, a drink after a stressful day, but usually lead to more. I might have a drink (did last night) but only one. We are supposed to eat our calories...not drink them. And I suppose it may be the unhealthiness of it (not the red wine but the liquor). Also, with a buzz typically it tends to uninhibit you , which leads to mindless eating.
