Weight Loss Surgery through Kaiser SoCal (Woodland Hills, San Fernando Valley)

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I just registered to this site, after doing some searches on people's experiences with WL surgery through Kaiser. I was able to find some info here but unfortunately, the info was pretty old & outdated (2007/08/09).

I am 34, 5'5'' and @ 260ish. I have asthma, have foot/ankle/knee problems (surgery through Kaiser last year on 1 ankle), PCOS, and no other weight related issues. Yet.....

I have been thinking about some form of WL surgery for some time now, and out of pocket funding is not an option for me. Since learning Kaiser offers up the Options program, I am looking to take advantage of it.

I don't really have a PCP right now. My previous one was close to an old job, and the Dr. I most recently saw, I HATED! His "bed-side manner" left much to be desired and he wasn't at all interested in listening to me or helping me. I'd rather keel over of a heart attack than go see him again.

I sent a message to Member Services today, to ask if I need to find a new PCP first to get a referal, or if they can refer me directly to the Options Program/Positive Choice department.

In the meantime...I am wondering if anyone out there is getting or got their WL surgery, and started their journey at Kaiser in Woodland Hills?

Any advice/tips/Dr. rec's would be GREATLY appreciated!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
