How fast is too fast for weight loss?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to lose at a slow and steady pace. I worry about having a lot of sagging skin. Since my fill last Tuesday I've lost like 5 pounds this week. I think my weight loss will continue like that for a while b/c I'm just not hungry. I eat 3 meals a day but they are very small meals and I'm done.

Is that okay or should I eat more high calorie foods so I lose slower?

Also right now I'm not even exercising. I had a hysterectomy almost 4 weeks ago so it will be 2 1/2 more weeks before I'm cleared for exercise again.

If you listen to the 'experts', they'll say no more than 2 lbs per week. Bah humbug. How fast you lose depends on how overweight you are to start with. The more overweight, the faster you'll lose on a 1200 calorie diet. As you get closer to your goal weight, it will slow down and it all evens out.

How much sag your skin has depends on genetics, how overweight you were and for how long, and age. I wouldn't worry about it.

I wouldn't worry about it either. For better or for worse, the weight loss will slow down. If you really feel like it's going too fast, hold off on your next fill. I think that eating higher calorie foods is a slippery slope! Congratulations on your success so far.

Excess skin is not related to weight of loss, contrary to popular belief. It is related to the degree to which it was stretched, duration of obesity, whether there were previous gains and losses (including pregnancies), genetics, age, whether you smoke, and other factors.

The only thing that rate of loss has to do with it is that, if you lose quickly, the excess skin becomes more evident sooner.

Truly--that's something to put out of your mind.

As for other safety concerns related to loss, talk with your doctor. Mine is fine with a very low calorie diet and rapid loss, as long as certain health indicators are intact. (He does routine blood testing, etc.)

I doubt that the fast rate will continue for long periods of time, so I wouldn't be too concerned about it for now. Just enjoy it while it lasts
