Lab Band & Birth Control

Recommended Posts

Hi Ladies...I have a question for you...

I have been banded for almost 10 months now and have only lost about 40lbs. That comes out to about 1 lb a week. A WHOPPING ONE POUND A WEEK! No matter how hard I try. I was wondering if it had anything to do with my birth control. I have the Mirena IUD. Have any of you ladies experienced trouble losing weight because of your birth control? I'm considering getting it removed to see if I lose more weight.

I have wondered this too. I am on the Depo Provera shot and have lost at an OK rate, not great though. (Down 62 in a year.)

Both my GYN and surgeon say it has little effect. Maybe 3-5 pounds Water weight. I don't get my period either, but some months feel the symptoms. (a little bloaty, irritable, etc.)

I can only listen to the docs and do a little research on the net. I guess we all have different reactions to these things.

I don't know about the BC aspect of it, but the expectation for loss with a band is 1-2 pounds per week. So both of you are within expectations.

We'd all like it to be faster, and it certainly seems to come off slower than it went on. Also, some just lose at a slower rate.

When I was actively losing, my average was 3/4 of a pound per week. It sucked, but it got me to a normal BMI, normal blood pressure, and normal cholesterol.

I think a pound a week is something to cheer about!

Just my two cents.

Hi Girls! I have been on birth control pills for almost seven years. I spoke to my doc about this pre-op and he actually recommends the pill for women who aren't already on it, of course to prevent pregnancy immediately after surgery. But I have not experienced any problem with my weight loss on the pill and am losing about 2-3 lbs a week. When its that TOM, I will notice my weight will stay the same for the week or be up slightly, but then it quickly goes away after the fact.

It might be worth mentioning to your GYN anyway.

I have the same IUD and I haven't had any trouble losing weight.

Surgery date: 1/25/10

OK...I went to my OB/GYN today and she said that the IUD should not be affecting my weightloss at all...so, maybe its just me...maybe I am just meant to lose only 1lb a week. I need to learn to just live with it. At least I am losing something. :-)

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
