3 Days Post Op---Weird Chest Pain

Recommended Posts

I was banded three days ago. So far, I've not had any problems with recovery that I know of. However, I am having trouble distinguishing when I may be hungry or not. I am so worried that my sips are too big or that I'm sipping too quickly. So I don't eat very often for fear of consuming too much. While I'm eating or drinking, there doesn't seem to be any problem, HOWEVER, long afterward (like one to two hours after some Soup let's say) I get chest pains that affect my deep breathing. Is this normal? Is it gas?

I called the nurse yesterday and she said it could be from the swelling and pushing my diaphragm or lungs. Has anyone else had this? Whatever it is scares me.

Thanks,

I had the same thing for 2 or three weeks. It was gas for me. Not a good feeling. Gas-x helped.

I also had the same feeling for about 2 wks...gas from when they blew my stomach up at surgery. It was more uncomfortable than anything else. Like she said, Gas-X did wonders. Good luck to you!

I also have it. I was banded on the 23rd of this month. It is painful if I take try to take deep breaths and it also hurts around the top of my back, all the way around my lungs. I thought I might ring the clinic tomorrow if it wasn't any better. May be it is just gas - I hope so. Let me know how you go over the next couple of days.

It sounds like gas. I have been sipping everything, the most I have been able to eat is about 3oz of soy yogurt today for lunch. Even when I sip, the pressure of the Fluid passing through my band causes gas pressure and it is uncomfortable, but I have been PBing and walking to get that gas to move.

You should be okay if it seems like gas, and occasionally shifts and you feel relief from the gas moving.

I hope you are okay!

Thanks everyone! I did a little experiment this evening. After I ate about 2 oz of applesauce, I tried to pay very close attention to whether or not I had the chest pain. I did not. Then, I took a gas-x strip. Still no pain. Now that is has been about an hour and a half, it's starting. I'm pretty sure it's gas.

Yep, sounds like it. This morning I woke up (off a very mildly sedated sleep) feeling GREAT, NO GAS PAIN! I was so excited. Then I went to the grocery store to do some walking and I was exhausted after 5 minutes and the gas pains were back! They seem to creep up on me just when I think I am getting some relief.

My system is also so sensitive, and I am lactose intolerant so taking my galbladder medicine has been a challenge. First I opened the capsule into soy milk, YUCK, then I mixed a capsule into some yogurt, BLECH! I am going to try a shot of juice this time!

I was banded on the 21st, so am 4 days post op. I have the same pain when I breath in deeply, especially in my shoulder. This is gas pain for sure. I'm dealing with it with GasX strips and Tylenol. I'm also trying to figure out when I'm hungry. I'm having 4 oz. liquid meals every 2 hours for a total of 6 meals a day. I haven't had any trouble getting down 4 ounces. I was busy watching my daughter's tennis match today so didn't get in all my meals, and by the time I got home, I was feeling hunger. The gas pain is getting better every day. I actually feel terrific with minimal pain. Sure wish I could have done this a long time ago. Good luck with the pain, just give it time.

I was banded on 9/22/10 as well and feel the same pain.. I've been drinking a shake spaced throughout the day, 5-5 teaspoons of sugar free pudding and a chobani. I've been trying to drink liquids as well, but am having pains when drinking crystal light and things that are room temperature or colder. I contacted the nurse at my Dr's office and she said it sounds like I may be over filling my pouch and to stick with liquids for today and to call her back at 2:00 this afternoon. I've been ok today with only a little discomfort, but really want to feel "normal" like everyone else I know that's had the surgery. I was planning on going back to work today, but opted to stay home till I know exactly what's going on. Hope you feel better!!!

I am on a liquid diet at this point, and everything I consume seems to slide right on through. I guess that's a good thing, but I feel like I'm not eating at all. However, I did have about 3 oz of yogurt this morning and I'm full. I am having a hard time drinking all day long. I just don't want it.

Incidentally, my chest pain is much better today. I am completely off my pain medication and while it hurts sometimes, it's tolerable. I go for follow up visit on Wednesday and should get some more answers then.

Good Luck to everyone.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
