What I just found out from insurance.

Recommended Posts

Hi. I will also post this over in the insurance section. I am currently on COBRA; but it will be running out in a few months.

I called my insurance to see what my policy will cost after COBRA. Turns out that due to LAPBand they will not cover me at all and that I need to turn to my states high risk insurnace pool. They will not cover me because of the lap band surgery. I have to be 3 years out. For a 1700 deductable the insurnance will be $526 a month for 80/20 policy. FYI. So hears to hoping that I get a full time direct job with benefits before my COBRA runs out!

You can get a policy that will only cover hospitalizations/major illnesses for a lot less than that. I had one once through Blue Cross. It didn't cover doctor visits or prescriptions it was just a major medical policy. I had $1K deductible and then 80/20. It was around $100 a month.

SpoiltMom, I have blue cross blue shield. They said I was uninsurable and that they would send me a rejection letter so that I could provide it to the state insurance group so I could seek coverage there. I DO NOT want to start a political debate; but insurance companies only have to insure children who have preexisting conditions. Insurance companies will not have to insure adults until like 2014.

The policy I had excluded all my preexisting conditions and I had lots and it really only covered like major major medical. Like catastrophic stuff that would leave you in a huge bind otherwise. I still had to pay for most daily/routine care. I had it on my son also but it covered more for him b/c he had no health conditions. I'm just saying it might be worth it to call an independent insurance agent and see what they can do.

Oh one thing though for me to get it I could not have a lapse in coverage. It started the day dh's policy dropped me and I had to provide proof of continuous coverage.

Oh and I meant to add there are other companies besides Blue Cross that offer these policies.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
