tests before operation

Recommended Posts

I had my office consult and I now I have all of my tests to do. I am sooo nervous. They said I could have it done in Oct. but I picked Nov to give me some time to get appointments done and get use to giving up the food. I was wondering if anyone else out there had to do an upper endoscopy before the big day. My surgeon says it is standard to check for hernias prior to the operation. Just wondering and also how long before the operation do you start a liquid diet? I meet with nutritionist and psych Oct 12th.:smile2:

I had my endoscopy last Wednesday and that was the end of all the testing I had to . I was a little sore in my chest a few days after, but other than that it was nothing. My doctor does a 2 weeks low carb diet two weeks prior to surgery and I start that on Monday. Good luck to you! You'll do just fine!

I am going to the seminar Sat morning. I just don't know what tests they are going to want. I hope they don't want the dr supervised diet for 6 months that would be a bummer.

I am 73 , snd the Drs in Colorado Springs wouldn't do it so I am going to Denver.

My sister had the lap band 2 yrs ago so I know a lot of what to expect. but hers was done in Phoenix . :smile2:

Yes, I have to get an upper GI as well. He never explained why, and I didnt ask. I also have to get a Cardiolgist clearance because I am over 50.

My surgery date is 10/4. I started my 2 week liquid diet on Monday. The first day was rough, but it is ok now, except I feel kind of weak.

My list of fun things to do was the same as topazz. Make sure it is an endoscopy and not an upper gi series. I thought I had to have an endoscopy but I was incorrect. I was told that the upper gi series (which is a barium swallow under a flouroscope) was a better way to see a hernia. Found out I have one! Glad all my tests are over now I am just waiting for my clearance. Nervous about that and the surgery!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
