How much is enough??

Recommended Posts

Maybe a silly and yet very complicated question. I have been doing great with dropping pounds every month- down 110 pounds and now I cant get that freaking scale to budge. I am in the gym for 2 hours a day, an hour of cardio and an hour of strength training. Bumped up my exercise and still no relief on the scale. Went back to tracking my intake and found that on average I am only taking in about 600 calories a day. I am staying lo fat and lo carb and getting my 60+grams of Protein. But, is the fact that I am taking in so little, the reason I am not losing???

So frustrated with this, I am busting my ass and the stupid scale isnt showing it.

I jogged 10 miles yesterday but I cant get the scale to drop a pound:-(

600 cal a day??? You need to up your calories - you body is in stravation mode - also - I find that if I back off exercise for 1 week - the lbs come off - makes no sense - but for me it works..

You need to stay off the scales every day too - weigh once a week - same day same time

Yes, not enough calories.

Also the trainers at the gym I go to say not to do weight training every single day. They advise that for optimum results, lift weights every other day.. this gives your muscles time to rest and repair the tiny tears that lifting causes.

It's fine to do Cardio daily though.

One other suggestion.. I too have lost quite a bit of weight and now the scales are barely moving. I decided to start taking my measurements monthly.

While the scales are somewhat disappointing .. the inches are coming off. A dress I couldn't wear in May, I could wear in June.. and I hadn't lost all that much.

Congrats on being so dedicated to working out. I think you just need to change things up a bit. If you can afford it, consult with a trainer.

I think you need to eat more too, purely for your future health. That sort of intake would generally place you at risk of malnutrition, osteoporosis, stuff like that, you really cant eat that little long term without supervision, especially doing as much exercise as you are doing.

You're doing more than enough. You've lost an awful lot of weight, personally, I think yoiu're just going to have to be patient. I found the same thing, I just kept on going at a moderate level - eating well, exercising regularly and that last 10lb took me a year to lose, there'd be nothing for months and months and then suddenly 3 or 4 lb would go overnight sort of thing. But I did lose it in the end.

Thank you everyone> I figured I wasnt getting enough but I have had THE RULES drilled since my first consult. Now I am so used to it, adding an extra meal is like waiting for the sirens to go off and the banding police to come get me:tongue_smilie:

I cannot eat more at a meal, do not want to make myself sick, which BTW i did today:crying: Tried to get in some extra cals and made myself miserably sick

Just frustrated that i have apparently hit a wall. I thought after a year I would know what Im doing but i guess everyday is a new challenge- used to struggle to limit my intake, now struggling to increase it.

If you are eating low or no fat, go back to full fat foods. Try adding some powdered milk to certain things to enrich them. You don't have to add a whole meal all at once, just bump each meal up a little bit. Gradual changes, baby steps.

The other thing I just noticed is that you are only 20lbs from goal... Do you think that your goal is realistic and perhaps you should think about revising it?

One other thought.. if you really can't increase your calories, try decreasing your exercise.

I have added a little bit of fat and good carbs back into my daily diet.

My goal weight would put me at 160lbs, the standard BS weight for height scale puts my goal weight at >150, i think thats unrealistic for me.

Also, I am in the gym doing classes I enjoy, I hate to give up some of it- that has become my little escape.

I knew to expect the loss to slow down as your body gets used to the activity and unfortunately your body cant keep up with losing 10+ pounds a month. Guess I'll make my little dietary changes and see where it gets me.

I agree with all the advice you've gotten. I would add maybe you need a slight unfill if you can't eat enough. Good luck!

Adding in heart-healthy fats will make a HUGE difference, esp. with all that exercise.

That is always an option for others maybe having the same issue. I forgot to mention, I have never had an adjustment so there is nothing to unfill. I wish it was that simple. Thanks again everyone- my next appointment is in 2 weeks so we'll see what happens between now and then- going to try and stay off the scale at home- considering throwing it in the backyard and burning it:tt2:

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
