Aussie Bandster: 1 week post-op

Recommended Posts

My names lannah. I'm 18 years old and from Sunshine coast (brisbane) Australia. I am new to these forum sites, because being a typical teenage i'm used to using Facebook lol.

I got banded 1 week ago, and i have lost about 10 kilos (22lbs) so far. I lost that weight a bit too fast, but i assume it will slow down from here on in. I had keyhole surgery and the only pain i have at the moment is from my "port" which sometimes hurts while laying down and is still currently bruised. But my other "Keyholes" are completely healed and look like little scratches :)

My starting weight was 130kg, and i am currently 117kgs. My goal weight is 80kgs.

Good luck Lannah.

You sound like you are doing great. This is a great site for banded people. There are members your age and members from Australia so you should seek them out.

I had surgery on 9/17 but I am not doing as well as you. I'm not doing bad, it's just that I had minor complications and they couldn't do the keyhole surgery (my doctor usually does it). First, I had a hernia repair where they put in mesh during a cesarean I had when I gave birth to one of my kids. My Aussie surgeon (yes, my surgeon came from your area and has a good rep both in Australia and the US) couldn't get in through my belly button (Bummer!). Second, one of my incisions, the largest, is still oozing blood. Probably not a big problem but it means my bandage keeps getting saturated and I don't want it on my clothes (Yuke!). Third, it takes me forever to eat anything. My esophagram was normal so I guess I just have to get used to the new volume.

The rest is normal. My shoulder pain is thankfully mostly gone. I still have some incisional pain in the longest incision area. It hurts if you press my port area and I try not to do it. My areas are still covered so I don't know what they look like.

I have not lost as much as you. I have not kept track post op at all but I know I have not been eating that much so I have to have lost. I lost about 15 lbs pre op. I have about 60 lbs to go. I go back to see my doctor on Monday, 9/27 for my first post op visit. I hope everything goes well with you.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
