How did you wean yourself off caffienated drinks?

Recommended Posts

Hi all - I'm wondering if you have any advice on how to wean off of caffiene drinks? I'm a huge diet coke drinker and I'm worried about caffiene withdrawal.

Any help would be appreciated!

Try Crystal Lite Ice Tea it is both caffeine or Decaf. I still drink the caffeinated tea. You need to get off the carbonation ... you won't be able to once you are banded.

Hi Roxy, i too was a huge diet coke lover, i won't tell you how much but only true diet coke lovers get it!!

I started cutting back the week before my sugery, and had one can the day before surgery. (the last can of diet coke ) I really miss it but have not really had the withdrawl i thought i'd have. Too busy with the post op pain, gas discomfort etc. Now i drink nestes zero or crystal light ice teas.

(sometimes i dream of diet coke big gulps, lol)

Good luck it's not that bad.

I love diet coke too and I gave it up cold turkey a couple of weeks ago. My surgery is this tuesday and I was drinking way too many so I had to just give it up. I had headaches for a few days, but they went away so its not that bad.

You have to wean off slowly because if not it is horrible if you do not. Try over a 2 week period and after that it is easy. You will get to the point where you really will not crave it. You have to replace it with something else though. I like any of the additives that you place in Water that is sugar free. Best of luck!

I switched to iced tea. At first it was difficult because it was just a habit for me to get a soda. I noticed it was harder to not get a soda at certain restaurants I went to. One good choice made it easier for more good choices.

Everyday is a work in progress for me. Good luck!

Mix it with Caff Free Diet coke in a glass to make it half caff, then slowly replace with all caff free

That's what I am doing with coffee, but not tried it with the cola's lol.

I am a big Diet Coke drinker too and have been worried about it also. I'm working hard in these last two weeks to keep it to one can or less per day. I think I'll completely stop by this weekend and see how it goes.

I was a big Diet Coke drinker (heck I even worked for them for a number of years)...I started to wean myself off 1 month before my pre-op diet. I tried to cut myself back to one can a day (some days i did great and other...well you know). Then the week of my pre-op diet started I opted for every other day and the final week before surgery I was off it.

I thought it would be sooo much harder than it has been. (we even have free diet coke in the office so it is always around and very accessible) I think the fear of carbonation and the band keep me just scared enough that I won't try it.

Good luck to you.

I was a huge DC drinker I also and feared the withdrawl would be painful...............Not so I drank up until the day of my surgery Last Oct 15, I wanted to be healthier and if meant the DC had to go along with everything else"Oh well" bye bye old friend.................I ve already replaced it with a far healthier drink Power Zero a sports drink made by coke.

I used to drink a ton of DC!! I weaned myself off when I went on my two week pre-op diet before surgery. I even weaned myself off of caffeine all together and I'm glad I did.

I got tired of crystal lite, which I still do drink on occasion, but I switched to Powerade zero.

It is possible to kick the DC!

I'm not a DC drinker, but I was a Mr. Pibb "feen". I had to remind myself that this procedure was a HUGE decision and that NOTHING is worth me screwing up this "last-ditch" effort.

It's been a full-month post-op. Last week while I was on a 7-day cruise, I thought I would jump overboard to tast a soda. Guess what, I ordered 1, took a sip--- I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED. The hype behind the crave wasn't worth the cheat or the $2.50 for that little aluminum can.

I learned a valuable lesson: Continue to CONQUER cravings as most often it won't be worth the cheat or extra calories. Hang in there !!!!!

I went cold turkey. I used to drink Dr. Pepper like it was going out of style. After I quite I had killer headaches for a while. Now about 3 months out I tried a sip of the good old DP and it is soooo nasty.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
