Prednisone.........

Recommended Posts

Hi all anyone out there have to take the steroid prednisone. I have been

on 20mg for 2 weeks and have already gained 4 lbs. I was told I could be

on this med. for 3-4 mos. or quite possibly longer. Anyone have any suggestions as to still lose and be on steroids. I have also been put on a

soft diet so its hard to get in alot of Protein. Most meats are too course.

Getting really down of myself even though I know its not my doing its the

damn prednisone. I was thinking of making an appointment for another fill

maybe that would be a help. The weight was falling off before I started on the

steroids. I would love to hear any suggestions. thanks.

Oh Mayflower, I'm sorry you have to be on the steroids :P

My sister was on Prednisone and she did gain alot as well but it left just as quick. I would ask your doctor who prescribed it as well as your surgeon if there is anything you can do. I'm sorry I don't know.

You can ground your meat if you need Protein or get some Protein drinks. Also Beans and tofu are a good source of it.

FEEL BETTER SOON !!!

I was on prednisone for a month and gained about 10 pounds. I was CONSTANTLY hungry and ate like a ravenous wolf.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't think it's possible to lose weight while on that medication. I would just continue to eat healthy and do the best that you can possibly do. Once you're off the medication, then you can continue with your weightloss goals.

Sorry you have to be on it, and like the others mentioned, maybe you can see if they could put you on something else instead.

Best wishes to you.

tough drug - miracle cure - easy out? For me, I had ITP where my immune system was eating my platelets - predinsone was the only thing that stopped the process until I had my spleen removed. Was on it for over a year - took 3 months to get weaned so the adrenilines start working again. I was always hungry, but so was i before prednisone. Gained 100 lbs and still have them today, 9 years later - but I'm not dying of low platelets either, just fat.

Hi Mayflower. So sorry to hear you're on prednisone. I was on it for a year because of my ulcerative colitis. I gained a few pounds, but it came off quickly afterwards.

Something that helped me during this time was reading this book: "Coping with Prednisone (and Other Cortisone-Related Medicines): It May Work Miracles, but How Do You Handle the Side Effects?" One of the authors had to take the drug for an extended amount of time and tells of how she dealt with it (and didn't gain weight). If you're interested in the book, you can get it off of Amazon.com: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0312195702/qid=1134315950/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-5518610-4996115?n=507846&s=books&v=glance]http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0312195702/qid=1134315950/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-5518610-4996115?n=507846&s=books&v=glance[/ame]

I am also a frequent prednisone user. The source of most of my weight gain. I am a terrible asthmatic. When I discussed this with my dr. he said that he might prescribe a short term appetite suppressant during my steroid courses if I wanted. It is definitely worth asking. I have not needed any since the band. If not, keep your head up and work really hard when you are finished with the prednisone. During the course, curb the hunger with as healthy of food as possible and exercise! Good luck to you, I hope this is short term!

My DH is a kidney transplant recipient. He takes Prednisone and has suffered several side effects including weight gain. He also found out it can cause early stage cataracts. I am thank ful that this drug keeps him alive everyday, but 36 is too young for cataracts. He is having his cataracts removed in January.

Prednisone does cause you to gain weight, but worse of all it changed my disposition. I was absolutely hateful on that medication. I wish you the best of luck. I'm sure everyone isn't affected in the same way. If you have to take it you have to take it.

Oh ((((Mayflower! )))) I'm so very very sorry you have to be on them for such a long time. Every time I've been on them it's a garenteed 10 pounds gained for me. It might be worth asking for an appitite supressant, I never thought of that.

I too always become this raging lunatic when I have to take it for my asthma. Thankfully, since being banded, my asthma is better than it has been in a very, very long time.

I'm so sorry.

Sorry but you will just have to live with the weight gain until you are off steroids. There's nothing you can do to avoid it. I am so sorry. I would be so frustrated if I were you! But the good news is that once you are off the prednisone, the weight will fall off pretty quickly. Predisone will also m ess seriously with your moods and the condition of your skin. So be careful. Right now just work on getting good nutrition.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
