Carnation Instant Breakfast anyone?

Recommended Posts

Have any of you done the Carnation Instant Breakfast protocol pre-surgery?

Pre-op diet consists of 5-6 sugarfree CIB daily for 10 days, nothing else but h20. If anything makes me nervous it's this liquid diet for 10 days while still trying to work a demanding job.

Feedback anyone?

I've been on Bariatric Advantage shakes for 9 days. 4 days to go, then 1 day Clear Liquids, then surgery on Sept. 21st. I've been doing 3 - 160 calorie shakes a day, and supplementing with low calorie organic Tomato and cream of broccoli Soups (70 calories a cup) which helps when you get sooooo sick of sweet stuff. Stock up on sugar-free: popsicles, gum, mints and Jello, it helps break things up a bit. Good luck!

Did they say you could mix it with milk?

I actually like this:

1 cup cold coffee

1 cup skim milk

1 pkg no sugar chocolate CIB

2-4 packets splenda

shake it up in Blender Bottle. I put in freezer for about 30 min to get ice chips in it, then drink it on my way to work.

You can't taste the coffee, but you may not be allowed coffee pre op.

I love my Blender Bottle (I got on amazon.com) it is great for Protein shakes on the go.

I haven't been approved for the surgery yet. Awaiting insurance decision but I am aware of the pre-op diet. MY surgeon requires 10 day liquid diet. I have tried 3 of the flavors. strawberry, vanilla & chocolate. I've used 1 Vanilla CIB, 3/4 cup of soy milk or fat free milk, a little bit of ice, 1 banana and then 1/2 cup of various frozen fruits (strawberries, raspberries, mangoes etc. For the Strawberry CIB I do the same. Chocolate I use the milk, banana, ice and add a teaspoon of Peanut Butter or Nutella. My favorite is the Vanilla with the Mango! Hope this helps. At least I know now which to stock up on when (if) my insurance approves me....

Hi Gracierose.

My pre op diet is worse than any I have seen, even yours. My doctor wants me on 5-6 CIB shakes a day for 14 days with no real food during this period! Your CIB diet sounds similar to mine except mine is longer. I can't have ANY fruit or fruit juice. I can have some veggies but only a limited amount. I can have up to 2 cups of coffee or other caffeinated beverage, unlimited diet soda (decaf) and unlimited H2O. I can have sugar fee Jello and sugar fee ice pops. I can also have chicken broth but you get sick of it after a while. Tomorrow is my surgery so I pretty much made it through this CIB diet. Although all of the CIB shakes mixed with fruit and other things sounds yummy, they are not allowed by my doc pre op.

The one thing good about this diet is I lost weight - about 6 lbs. It may be more weight than that but my scale needs a new battery and seems unpredictable. I definitely lost weight - I feel it in my clothes.

If I can do CIB for 14 days, you can do CIB for 10 days, Gracierose. Best part of CIB when you do it for all meals is you'll lose weight quickly to jump start your weight loss. Best of luck with sticking to your pre op diet and best of luck with your surgery!

The difference in pre op do vary. I feel so lucky with mine.

3 days of liquids, but my liquid is 4 unflavored powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury mixed with fruit juice and 2 cups of broth. Plus sugar free Jello and sugar free popsicles. Water and crystal light.

No milk, no caffeine.

Hi Puppybandit.

Now that this 14 day liquid diet is almost over, I'm GLAD my surgeon picked this draconian diet. I agree that it was a killer while it lasted but it was still a limited period of time.

My weight loss from the diet in such a short period is making me really happy!!!! Yeah!!!!:thumbup::alien: Plus, I should have definitely shrunken my fatty liver with this weight loss, making my surgery tomorrow much safer. I'm nervous about the surgery tomorrow as it is. Anything to reduce the risk makes me feel safer, although I know nothing can reduce the risk to 0.:eek6: That's why I am still nervous.

My surgeon's office gave me two different diets to choose from and one is the CIB. It's 5 shakes made with 2% milk each day, plus juice, cottage cheese, gatorade, yogurt, and sugarfree jello/pudding cups in between.

Example:

Breakfast: 8 oz shake and 4 oz juice(not mixed together and I wait about 30 minutes before I drink the juice)

10:00: AM 8 oz shake and 1/2 cup of cottage cheese

Lunch: 8 oz shake and 6 oz cup of yogurt

3:00 PM:8 oz shake and 8 oz gatorade

Dinner: 8 oz shake

Once a day I can have 1/2 cup of broth and all day I can have Crystal/Wyler's Light, sugar free Jello, coffee or tea with splenda and Water.

Honestly, I haven't been drinking as many shakes as I should and I got really weak and nauseated yesterday and ended up having to cheat at lunch. I only ate a cup of won ton Soup, but I felt really guilty.

I'm only doing the CIB until the unjury that I ordered arrives and then I'll stay with that one.

Thanks for your good wishes Puppybandit. I appreciate it!

Surgery is now over. It is post op day 2 for me. I now have to adjust to eating a lot less and a lot more slowly!

What I find is that it is hard to get in what I am expected to eat. I just ate what I was told to eat for breakfast - one CIB shake and 1 cup coffee. I ate it over the span of 1 hour which is really slow and I feel nauseous. I hope this passes. The nausea seems to come and go. It's making me concerned. I don't think I can eat as much as they say.

Maxi

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
