I don't think I took the easy way out!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! I just needed to vent! There is a doctor that comes into work and basically said I took the easy way out with having this surgery done! :crying: That really upset me! I have lost 40 pounds since my surgery on May 13, but it has not been easy. I walk 3-5 miles five days a week and I watch what I eat. I joined a gym yesterday to add weight training. I love my band and it has helped me immensely, but I have had to work at this weight loss. Having this surgery done, I have had to give up things that I didn't want to (bread, some meats, gum, pop, etc). For me, in the end, it's all worth it! I don't regret having it done for an instant and would do it again in a heartbeat!!!! I just get tired of ppl acting like the band is doing all the work! Thanks for listening guys!

jllybean1982,

I completely agree. I think I even thought I was kind of taking the easy way out when I decided to get banded. Boy was I wrong. People who choose to pass such judgement have NO CLUE what it's like to have to give up several favorite foods, not to mention HAVING to stop eating something absolutely delicious after only a few bites. It's a tough road, and definitely not easy! I have a few friends who are thin but would like to lose a few pounds. They love to tell me how much they wish they had a band to help them lose a little weight because I make it look easy. I am always happy to tell them that living with the band is HARD!!!

Chin up. Remember you did this for you, not that jerk doctor or anyone else who judges you for it. What I always remind myself of is that if I could do it simply with diet and exercise, I wouldn't have gotten as heavy as I was. I NEEDED this tool.

&%@+ the doctor. This is about you and your health. Not what other people think. Congrats on losing so much weight.

I have had the same problem as you with people who are either ignorant on the subject, or deliberately want you to fail.

Granted, not all of them are doctors, but they still feel as if they know what works. Ironically, most of them are always Obese themselves... lol

I have had people tell me that surgery is the weaker way out, and all we have to do is drink lots of Water and walk. <------- This coming from an overweight woman working at a local fried catfish restaurant.

The point is, we all know what it takes with the band. Don't let people get to you, because no matter what they say, you're still going to have the band and you're still going to be able to lose the weight. They can't stop you from reaching your goal!

Good luck to you!

The world is full of people without a clue. Pity their ignorance and let whatever they say to you go in one ear and out the other.

I appreciate that guys! It just irritates me cuz most of my friends see how hard I am working and what I have had to give up having this surgery. Then you have ignorant ppl that come along and crush your self esteem. I keep trying to tell myself that I know how hard I've worked to keep this weight off which means I also know how hard you guys are working!

JOHN---OMG! Congratulations on your 143 pounds weight loss! I'm at my computer desk giving you a standing ovation! LOL That is so impressive!!!! You are so right when you say it's the obese ones giving the advice alot of the time! My mom's 300 pound cardiologist is always lecturing my 275 pound mother to lose weight. She does need to lose weight, but it doesn't sound as good coming from someone who cant take their own advice!

Thanks for making me feel better guys! Good luck on your weight loss journeys!

I don't think so either! You are doing great girl! You just worry about yourself and don't let the haters get you down. I told someone the other day that this is the hardest thing I have had to do because I love food! he's a drinker so I said imagine living in a liquor store where you can drink as much as you want. He was like HELL YEAH!! I said now imagine one day someone tells you that from now on you can only have 3 shots a day. He said oh hell no! I said...thats what its like for me Seeing food everywhere but having to learn what is good for me to eat because I don't want to waste my time eating junk when I can only eat about a cup of food. he kind of got the picture. We will always meet up with people that think we took the easy way out. You just keep your head and keep moving right along. Heck easy would be waking up one morning and all the weight have fallen off in the middle of night! That isn't going to happen lol.

Good Luck,

Cheryl

I don't think there is any easy way to loose weight and to then keep it off. But if there was an easy way why wouldn't you choose it. The ultimate goal is to be healthy and wouldn't any one with a brain choose the easiest path to reach that goal? The band helps us to make good decisions about what and how much we eat. But it is still up to us! Be proud of what you are achieving.

There is a doctor that comes into work and basically said I took the easy way out with having this surgery done!
"Really? you think so, Doctor? I'll keep that in mind next time I'm up at 5 a.m., exercising before work while you're...what? sleeping? And when I'm measuring out my 3 ounces of Protein and half-cup of nonstarchy veggies, I'll be sure to remind myself how easy this is. Sure, the band will help with hunger--once I reach restriction. But only as long as I use it properly. But hey---if you say it's easy, it must be easy, huh? I hope you are better-informed about the topics you discuss with your patients."

(But then, I was always a mouthy nurse.)

Fight fire with fire.

Tell him that he took the easy way out becoming a doctor instead of having a real man's job like construction worker or soldier.

You guys are awesome! Betsy- I never even thought of it that way! While my friends at work are sitting eating their lunch, I go for my second walk of the day (the first one being BEFORE work at 5:15am)! I wish I had that metabolism where I could eat anything and not gain weight, but unfortunately I don't. The band does not get rid of mental hunger, so I still have that to deal with. Plus the frustration of getting things stuck which is not comfortable. LOL Betsy! I too am a nurse and even though I'm normally a quiet person, I do tend to be mouthy at times when it comes to my patients! :smile2:

Very true Btrieger! Its funny cuz doctors give orders, but who actually does the work!?!...the nurses!!!! :)

Thanks guys!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
