Just got my date now I'm afraid

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I just got my date today and its in 2 weeks time.

I have to start the Optifast this Thursday which will be ok I as its the begining of my journey.

I wanted to as, did any of you have uneasy thoughts about having the port under your skin?

I know thousands of people have had this done and I would like to know if any of you also felt uneasy about the port.

Thanks

:) Yea I had thoughts of the port or having the device in all together gave me thoughts like hmm im like a robot person now or something but really I cant even feel my port i dont even know exactly where it is to be honest lol... Ive been banded for about 1 month... You just have to ask yourself one thing is it worth losing it? for me it was yes and im still glad i made the decision... Now im just worried about the extra skin... lol but that will come in time! I think anything that can scare you about the band will do it especially since your surgery is so soon so keep going! and keep us posted ill cheer you on!

my friend there is nothing to be nervous about....now i know everyone is different but i must say it wasnt that bad. I was at my kids football game the next night. You will be sore from the incisions and uncomfortable from the air that gets in your abdomen but really not that bad. By the 3rd day i felt just about normal again. I was back to work in 10 days. I just had my first fill today and that wasnt bad either. Good Luck!!!!

I am not banded yet... I am hoping to be really soon but my son has a port in his chest for chemo. He had it put in when he was 2.5 and he is now 5. I know its not the exact same as being in your abdomen but it has never bothered him. You can see it when he raises his arms or in a certain position but other than that you would never even know he has it. He has had it accessed a lot in the beginning of treatment but now its only once a month. He doesn't cry when he gets it accessed, we use emla cream ( a numbing cream) before hand. I even forgot his cream once and they used a freeze spray and he was fine with that too.

Good luck to you and wish you lots of success with your journey!!

Terri

Hi Gerry! I am getting banded on the 28th I start my fasting tomorrow! I think we all have fears of the unknown but try and look at all the positives and leave the negatives. I have heard some say they can feel the port and some say they can't. Most of all no matter what I mostly hear people say they would do it over again and love it no matter what! Go with that and good luck. Clear your mind, go forth and succeed!!

hi all

thanks for your replies and help its so nice to know there are others with weird thoughts.:crying:

I started my Optifast today and its not the nicest stuff but its a means to an end.

I get banded on the 7th oct and will only stay one night. It took me one year on the public hospital free waiting list to be called for surgery which is not very long at all really.

I havent set a weight goal yet but I have 2 goals My goals are to reduce my medications and to look ok in a pair of jeans christmas day 2011 I dont mean perfect but just ok.

Gerry,

Believe me when I tell you I was a nervous wreck. The closer to my surgery date, the more nervous I became. I just kept reminding myself that I have tried and failed so many times at losing weight that I needed help. I couldn't handle another failed attempt at losing weight. It took me awhile to get used to the idea of having a foreign object in my body. To be honest..it still freaks me out a little. I am surprised about how I can twist and bend and still not feel the band inside me. It had really helped me with my weight loss, so I would definitely recommend having it done! Good luck to you Gerry!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
