Should not have read surgery stories. Need reassurance

Recommended Posts

Will meet with surgeon on Wednesday and get a surgery date at that time.

I have read many of the "surgery day" stories and am suddenly freaked out. I am no stranger to the medical world since I an an RN, but holy cow.....feel like I'm in for a rough few days. Anyone out there with a tolerable 24 hours post-op?

Hi GracieRose ! Yeah me. Immediate Post Op I was severely groggy from the general anesthesia / I was out patient being discharged for home so I crashed for about 4 hours but when I woke up I felt a good 90% there ... a little soreness at the belly button where the port is and at my entire tummy for being inflated by gas for the surgery but feeling pretty decent. The next day I felt a little worse because I realized the first day I took the pain killers... BUT I never took them after the first day. So the second day I felt about 80 % and by the third day I was back at 90% and then pretty close to normal the next day after.

Today I am 5 days Post Op and I feel normal. No big deal. The Port is still sensitive as it is a foreign object under my skin and I am still not used to it yet but I feel pretty normal.

I agree with Brian, don't worry, it's not painless but you will feel better every day. I was banded on 10 september and stayed in hospital overnight. On the 11th, I felt a bit rough but slept for most of the day and the next day I felt quite a bit better. Other than pain in my upper abdomen where the wounds are(I have 5) I'm fine now. the wounds pull a bit if I move about too quickly - but it's worth it!!!

I had surgery on 10/20/09 (Tuesday) at 10 am, rode home 2 hours from Dallas around noon, rested at home, took the pain medicine that night so I could sleep, rested the next day, just kind of laying around on the couch and then went to work on Thursday. The pain in my stomach was similar to starting a new gym routine from scratch and being sore from that and I had pain in my shoulder that was similar to a sprained ankle.

Don't freak yourself out. I'm with the rest of the posts. I was banded 7/30/09 as an outpatient. I was pretty groggy that day which was a Thursday. Took pain meds as need on Friday. Was up and about on Saturday and Sunday and went back to work on Monday. You will be just fine. Good luck!!

I was discharged before lunch on the day of surgery, slept for about 3 hours at my daughters house, woke up refreshed. Stomach hurt some, but not too bad. Had some pretty serious indigestion, but that went away in about 2 hours. Then made a 4 hour road trip home. The next day I felt much better!!!! I had surgery on Friday, and went back to work on Monday. Was real tired, but the pain had all but went away. After one week, I felt like a million bucks. I am not quite 3 weeks out and the dr. has returned my back to all normal activities. I even mowed with my tractor last week. Don't be afraid. Make sure you have something for gas BEFORE you get it!!!! Walk as much as you can, and you will be fine.

My surgery was just this last Friday and it was super easy, showed up at 7:30 and was home by 1:30. Took a small nap and just chilled on the couch rest of the day. Next morning went to the store to get some Soups and just to walk around. I even did a little cleaning the day after. Yeah I was sore but the more I walked the better I felt and of course I made sure to take my meds every 4 hours and not wait until I hurt again to take it. I went back to work Monday and stop taking my meds Monday as well.

Hey!

I am just about 48 hours post-op and things have been bearable-some moments are worse than others. I believe I am having more pain because of the hiatal hernia that they repaired at the same time as inserting the band. I won't lie and say I have been without pain-I have been in pain, but I can handle it..it does get better as time goes on. Even with experiencing all the physical aches and pains, I would go ahead and do this all over again in a heart beat. I have had worse "injuries" (pain-wise) that this surgery. You can do it! Good luck:)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
