can anyone help me?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am a year post op, lap band. I have lost 108lbs. About two months ago, I started having this problem, have tried everything I can think of and TTOW (the webmaster from Surgically Altered Freaks) suggested I come here and ask. I got what I thought was a cold complete with the runny nose and cough. It has lasted for 2 months. I have post nasal drip that causes the thickest most gross copeous secretions. Whenever I lay down to try and sleep, within 10 to 20 min I am waking up coughing and spewing this mucous from my nose and mouth.

I have talked to my PCP, my pulmonologist, my cardiologist and my nurse at my WLS office. I have been on Claritin/ zofrin/ allegra/ prednisone/ benadryl/ nyquil/ robitussin and have gotten no relief.

I am eshausted. Brian (my nurse) suggested eating a cracker to help bind and take the mucous through. This worked for a moment, but still I woke up like Mount Vesuvious soon after going to sleep.

Can anyone here help me?

Have you tried doing a Neti-pot 3 times a day. I have bad sinus problems so I can relate to yours. I think the Neti works wonders. You might give it a try. You can find them at Wal-Greens I know.

The neti pot is fantastic for sinuses. Make sure you use non-iodozed salt in it. I do it morning and night during high allergy times and it really reduces the amount of sinus infections I get.

Also... this may sound simple but have you tried Afrin? It really dries out the sinuses. I get really sinusy and post nasaly and it always turns into a cough and within a day a hospital trip because of my asthma. The first sign of post nasal drip I start using Afrin sinus twice a day for 2 or 3 days and most of the time it does the trick. Neti pot daily to keep irritants out of my nasal passages, but sometimes there's just too much so the afrin helps me.

Just be careful of the afrin! it is highly addictive, my husband has been addicted to afrin for over 20 years now! just a word of advice....

Just a thought...Have you tried an ENT (Ear Nose and Throat.) It may be possible that you have developed a sinus infection. Also having being banded, you may have gastric reflus that is coupling with this issue. An ENT can do a quick look in his office and possible get a sample to perform a culture and sensitivity. Alot of the meds you are taking are dryind agents..you actully need something to loosen up your secretions. Drink lots of Water as this helps with the thinning process and seek help fro, a qualified ENT...Best of luck to you!

Thank you so much for your quick reply. I have tried the Neti Pot, and it worked for a bit, and I tried Afrin and it worked for a bit, but my doc doesn't want me using it. I will try getting an appointment with an ENT and see if that will do the trick. Thanks again.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
