Gallbladder remove before lap band surgery

Recommended Posts

My doctor is scheduling me to have my gallbladder remove 4 days before my lap band surgery.

Have any of you heard of this or gone thru this?

A bit nervous of having to be under anesthecia two times so close to each other.

Thanks

I asked my doctor the same thing because I have gall bladder attacks every now and then. He said its because removing the gall bladder would contaminate the other surgery because of the stuff in the gall bladder. He said it better than that of course, but that's what I got out of it.

My Dr is removing my Gallbladder in the same surgery. He is removing it first. Sure, there have been cases of contamination and banding will be postponed, but he said that rarely happens. Good luck to you, I definitely understand your concerns of being put to sleep twice so close together. Keep us updated.

My doctor does not normally remove the gallbladder at the same time. One of the nurses said that they have ever only removed one during the banding surgery. In this case the gall bladder was gangrenous and she was astonished that the patient had not been in horrific pain. In that case leaving it in would have been malpratice.

I also have to have my galbladder out before the lap band. I also had the same concerns about being put under twice in such a short amount of time. I was told they cant do it together as the lapband usually causes people to throw up or have acid reflux type issues in the few first days. If you have the galbladder out and have those issues at the same time could cause strain on the incisions and have bile leaks and bacterial infections. I was told two weeks in between surgeries is required.

Oct 22 gal bladder removal date. December set for band. Plus I hear you will feel alot better with the galbladder is out. Pretty common surgery today-takes the dr around 40 minutes to perform.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
