Does your surgeon numb you b4 a fill?

Recommended Posts

At my last appt. before surgery i asked my surgeon if he numbs the area before a fill and he said no that usually causes more pain so he doesnt do that. I am having my surgery on September 21st and I am already worried about the pain of a fill with not being numb. Just curious what everyone elses dr. does and if I am worrying for nothing.

I am going to be honest. One fill only so far for me. It was not numbed and it hurt like a b****!!!! I seriously had tears running down my face. The good new is the pain was short lived and once it was over, the pain was gone.... It is not going to stop me from getting another fill!!

Okay let me tell you...I am not good with pain, a real baby, but I have had about 5 fills so far and none of them were painful. I was really scared on my first one too, but the needle was so thin that it felt like a little prick. Now there was a time when my port flipped and I was stuck about 10 times because the Doc was trying to find the opening of the port...that started getting painful after about the seventh time...now I am not scared to get a fill at all and I have never been numbed.

my dr doesn't numb it. i asked lol. i'm a weenie at times too. he laughed and asked me why? cuz i read you can have it done that way. he said the more weight you loose around your tummy the easier it is to find the port and the less painful it is. then told me to get to work- then smiled at me. yes sir!! really it wasn't all that bad. the bad part was trying to find the port, after that it was a breeze. good luck!!

No numbing...I just do a little 1/2 crunch position and she puts in the small needle, withdraws all the Fluid to check the amounts and re inserts it plus the fill. Just a little pinch.

I had my first fill Aug. 19th and I was scared to death that whole day. I just knew it was going to be painful because my doctor doesn't numb it either. I was a nervous wreck. Lo and behold, when he did my fill...it didn't hurt one bit! I felt so silly for worrying so much about it. Having my finger pricked hurts worse than my fill did. I see that different people have had different experiences but, mine didn't hurt at all! I hope yours turns out as well as mine did! =)

Thanks for all the input. Honestly if I can get through the surgery then the fill should be the least of my worries. I have just read some posts where people are like if I didnt get numbed I would die but, like several of you have pointed out it is different for everyone.

I get my first fill in a couple of weeks and I am nervous too. Thanks to all that posted. I feel a little better! My port is near my belly button ... hopefully it won't be too bad.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
