1st day with the band

Recommended Posts

Had my surgery yesterday. I could not wake up, took about 5 hours to get those drugs out of me. I am really sore today and hopefully will feel better each day. The Dr. let me come home the same day. I have triwest insurance and my total payment is $25 bucks, feel lucky there. I also got the fills approved.

Hey there gratz!

I was banded Tuesday. Let me tell you the first week is a bunch of fun (not) lol

Everyday does get better - If it wasn't for the gas, and swelling all would be good.

It's also been hard for me to not get my mind around the I won't get dehydrated with such little food.

Good luck!!!

Ps: "What did I do" will enter your mind a whole bunch. Just know it was for the better.

I spent this week thinking "wth did I do to myself?" I have been in pain, from incisions, gas, throat, and back. When one cleared up a little, the others hit with a vengence. BUT... Tuesday was surgery, and today is Saturday. I am better, can move better with just a little soreness, and not crying at every step or turn. This might be TMI, but try to get the gas out the back end. You shouldn't be able to burp yet, and it needs to get out to make you feel better.

Hi and welcome! I am just over 2 weeks post op and feel great! Well, except for this sciatic nerve flare I have going on--but I don't think that has to do with being banded.

My first 2 days back at work were rough, not used to the constant activity. Otherwise I am adjusting well and I hope you do too.

I was banded on 9/10 and I am not in any real pain. Just very uncomfortable. I cant sleep more than a couple hours at a time because of the swelling/bloat/gas. It is insane. I managed a full day of errands today and luckily with all the walking I passed gas twice which made me feel like there is an end in sight. Nothing since then and here I am again up at 4am because I cant sleep. Im stomach sleeper so this is torture for me

I am in a little pain and very uncomfortable. I can't sleep and its about 4 a.m. I have gas and can't get rid of it. Yesterday, the day after surgery I felt pretty good until last night. So after reading all of this sites, I must be normal. I will be glad when the next week goes by.

I was banded two days ago and I had no idea that the whole body would hurt. I just thought the stomach and shoulders. I feel awful. I still nurse my baby and that is not fun either. It's hard with 4 kids and I cannot move a muscle. Does anyone know whay the WHOLE body has to hurt. I feel like I have been working out for hours. Even my calves hurt. The percocet makes me itch crazy so I am just trying to do the ibuprophen 800mg. I wasnt sure if it could be swallowed, but I took two of them. Any advice out there?

Oh happy day! A new day and a new life. This is my 4th post op day and except for a little gas that moves around I have not really had that much pain. I have been on just plain Tylenol since the second day. Except for walking alot have not been able to do much. I can tell I already have some restriction with my eating. I feel so blessed to have this opportunity to change my life.

Man 25 bucks!!! I wish! You have great insurance! I was made to pay the 20% before the surgery and put 400.00 down the day of the sugery and paid my lapband doctor 600.00 a couple of weeks before that. Luckly the hospital will let me pay the remaining 1000 in monthly payments because they had to rush my sugery two weeks ahead of time and I told them there was no way I could drop that kind of money in one day!!! I would miss my car note all over again to have this surgery! LOL!

You need to notify the surgeon if there is a baseball size lump,it is not the port. You could possibly have a hematoma. Do you have fever?

My surgery was on thurs (9/9) and just today i'm feeling somewhat better. The worse pain was the gas and the throat. I went to an ENT dr. yesterday and there is a lot of inflammation in the throat which is due to the acid in my stomach. I have a single incision in my belly button and today for the first time I was able to bend and pick up something I dropped on the floor so there is progress. I've had to get all of my meds either soluble or chewable all because of my throat. Tomorrow is my 1 week follow-up and hopefully i will be ok to drive.

Sometimes reading the posts here make me wonder if some people just weren't mentally ready for WLS and needed more time with the bariatric team psychiatrist. Complaining about the limited drink/food choices early on... blah..blah...blah. The living to eat mentality really needs to go and be replaced with eating to live. JS

We have to remember that everyone moves at their own pace. For some it may be harder to adjust, people may have other factors at play that feed into the unhealthy relationship with food e.g. eating disorders, trauma. I'd hope those who you are referring to address this outside of this forum, with a professional.

This is a place to feel safe to vent, seek advice, hopefully without judgement.

Compassion goes a long way :)

Seems it would be more compassionate not to perform a WLS on someone until they are mentally ready for it. Unless of course they are on death's door...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.
