Three Day Pre Op diet question

Recommended Posts

Just wondering, for those of you that have done three day liquid diet before your surgery, is it the usual practice to ONLY have clear broth, sugar free Jello, Water and tea?

It seems to me that I see folks have Protein shakes in there and I am confused as to why my doctor only ordered me to have the above?

My hospital that called me for pre registration was concerned about me going so low on calories so she even took it upon herself to call my Doctor, just to make sure I had the facts correct and he confirmed that was all I was to have.

HOLY MOLEY, I am only partway through day one so not hungry at this point, but really concerned that I may get to that nagging point in another day or so.

What did you do hunger wise if this is what you also had to do?

I am most certainly willing to do this, it has been a long journey since the beginning of the year and I am so so happy and excited for my surgery on Monday and starting my whole new life.

But however, I am concerned about the low amount of calories I am ingesting. Anyone?

Thanks kindly.

Hi. I am currently on the pre-op as well and I am to have Protein Shakes (4 per day) along with a choice of 6 servings of out of various sugar-free jello's, puddings, etc selections....The calories is probably based on your lab results, weight and other evaluations. I am getting between 500-1000 per day. Each Dr is different so there probably isn't a correct answer. BEST OF LUCK!

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) every surgeon is different in what they request for pre-op and for how long.

My surgeon also does the ONLY clear liquid and sugar free pre-op diet. Be glad you only have three days! My husband had 2 weeks of it for his bypass and I will have a whole week starting October 4th.

Just stick to it and it'll be over before you know.:thumbup:

Hi Traci, My surgery is scheduled for 9/13 and am on day 11 of liquid diet. I get Protein Drinks as well 3-4 but the idea is to shrink the liver as much as possible and the liquid diet is the way to do it. When the liver is enlarged it can get in the way and make for a lengthier procedure. I'm pretty much beyond hungry at this point and can hardly stand the sight of the Protein drinks anymore but as my friend says "eye on the prize"! Good luck with the diet and the surgery.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
