Hi Everyone.....I am brand spanking new here - attended seminar last night in Greenville, PA. My BMI is currently 40 and I cannot lose much weight or I will be under 40 - never had the "shouldn't lose much weight" problem before LOL. Anyhow, I've just turned 50 and am sooooo ready for this process. Like many others I have lost and gained the same 100 lbs before only this time I can't exercise. I have had bilateral total hip arthroplasty (replacements) and had complications with the first. I have lost the abiltiy to exercise the way I need for weight loss. One question I have is will I need to crush meds "forever" or just during the healing period? I take meds for pain management and one med can be changed to a patch, but the other I don't think. It is Neurontin and for nerve pain - surgeon accidentally cut my sciatic nerve and I now have permanent sciatica :blushing: so to be able to walk without crutches I must take this med. I also take Welbutrin and wonder about it's crushability. Any thoughts or guidance? Thanks, Billie

Welcome... I am fairly new here also. I am getting ready to leave for my 1 hour drive to the hospital for my pre-op appointment. My banding date is Sept. 21st. I have also lost the ability to exercise due to the need for a heart transplant. My exercise is limited to just geting out of bed somedays! I do have a treadmill and manange to get in about 3 - 5 minutes most days.

I talked to my pharmacist and found out which of my drugs can and cannot be crushed. After I talked to them I took thier recommendations to my doctor and made the changes I needed. Some pain meds are liquid. As far as if it is forever, I am not sure, but I guess I should find out. That might be important to know.

Good Luck to you and God Bless:smile2:

I'm pretty sure you can swallow meds if they are fairly small - my surgeon told me nothing bigger than an M&M. Just talk to your pharmacist and ask them which can or cannot be crushed... they should provide a liquid alternative if it can't be crushed.

Good luck in your journey!! :blushing:

The meds mostly just need to be crushed right after surgery. After that as long as they are smaller than an M&M they should be fine. If your Wellbutrin is the extended release then it's not crushable and you may need to change meds. Anything extended release can't be crushed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
