I think I'm having some hair loss??

Recommended Posts

The last few days I've noticed that everytime I run my hands through my hair I'm left with a handful of hair. Has anyone done much reading on this? How much am I expected to lose? I got right back on my chewable vitamins and I'll make sure every calorie I eat is nutrient rich. I have a lot of hair to begin with but I really hope it doesn't get too thin. YIKES!!!:blushing:

Hi Pollywogg - this is what I read about hair loss / Protein. I'm not putting you in any of the judgemental categories they identify ... but given that it's harder to eat Proteins now ... maybe the cause?

++++++++++++++++++++

Inadequate Protein in diet. Some vegetarians, people who go on diets that exclude protein, and those with severely abnormal eating habits, may develop protein malnutrition. When this happens, a person's body will help to save protein by shifting growing hairs into the resting phase. Massive hair shedding can occur two to three months later. Hair can then be pulled out by the roots. This condition can be reversed by eating the proper amount of protein

I didnt notice an increase in this, but my hair is like that ALL the time. My brushes are always full of hair, there is always hair on my pillow, there are tennis ball size plugs of hair in the shower drain weekly, I serve up my hair regularly to my family in their dinner, it drives me freaking nuts.

But I never go bald and my hair is not thin either. So dont panic TOO much just yet, but all you can really do is make sure you're as well nourished as possible.

Thank you Greenbeans and Jachut. I do eat Protein first at meal times but I guess I could always do better with my nutrition. I'm so happy to hear you had a lot of Hair loss too but didn't really notice it. So far its the same for me and I hope it stays that way.

I was banded in June and noticed the last couple of weeks that I am "shedding" also. I don't get it - I am eating way better than before my surgery and I know before surgery I didn't eat 55-65g of Protein a day.

Hi! I was banded in July 2010, and I too am experiencing Hair loss. I've also read that this could be a result of the anesthesia 3 to 4 months after surgery. So regardless of how much Protein we eat, we still may lose hair due to the anesthesia. My hair is thin now, but I would rather have thin hair than be unhealthy and miserable. It's just one of those con's, but the pro's far outweigh it. And the good news is, it all comes back in about a year. (that's what they say, anyway) I take Biotin everyday, that is suppose to help. And make sure you get your protein in.

I have been losing my hair for about a month now. I was banded 7/8/10. My hair is really getting thin..but, it seems to slowing down a bit this past week. I sure hope it stops soon! I am pretty sure that is caused by surgery. I had the same problem the first of the year after a surgery I had for another issue. I freaked out! I lost hair for a couple of months and then it stopped. So, hopefully that is what is happening this time! =)

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
