Help - Banded and Re-banded

Recommended Posts

I have never posted before, but I am so frustrated and not sure what to do. I was originally banded back in February 2007 and everything was going well. By August 2007 I was down 45 lbs and feeling great. To my surprise, I found out I was pregnant. I was elated since we had been trying for over 4 years with no avail. My doctor thought it be wise to remove all the Fluid out of the band while pregnant. The pregnancy went well and I had a healthy baby girl in May 2008. Since I was breastfeeding he did not want to put fluid back in until I was finished, which was in October 2008. I had several fills and nothing seemed to work. We found that my band had slipped and I needed to be re-banded, which happened in February 2010. Since then I have had several fills and no matter what, I never feel any restriction. My doctors noticed that the band is not sitting properly, but felt it was ok to continue. He stated that since I lost weight that there wasn't enough fat to hold it in place like originally. I can eat and eat and eat. I have to stop myself. What can I do to help jumpstart my weight loss again. I am so frustrated since originally I was doing so well prior to the birth of my daughter. I have had some testing done and I do have a thyroid problem (on synthroid to control), and just found out that I am lacking Vitamin D and B-12. I have begun weekly B-12 shots and increased my Vitamin D intake, but still feel so tired.

Should I just reserve to the fact that I will never be able to lose the weight that I originally wanted to?

I was banded in July 2009 and lost about 40 pounds up to christmas and then I just felt no restriction at all. My doctor then moved to another state so I needed to see a new doctor who ordered a sip scan and found that the band had undone. My first doctor then rebanded free of charge and I am now in week 4. They gave me a fill of about 3ml and I feel that I need more. You paid for this surgery. Dont just let them push you around. If they wont fix it then threaten legal action. You have rights!

Also I have never heard of a band slipping cause you lost too much weight. My sister lost 180 pounds , is pregnant now and even without the Fluid she still feels restriction. I think they are just trying to bully you.

I hope it all works for you. I do understand you frustration... when everyone else is losing weight around you and your weight just stops. I was too scared at first and it took 6 months to own up that I didnt feel restriction cause I felt like a failure. You are not the failure, the band failed you !

Everyone is different.....it sometimes takes people numerous fills to reach proper restriction. You stated that you already had testing to ensure that the band is in proper position, so you just need to be patient, and not so hard on yourself. Follow the band rules, and continue to get your fills.....it will work!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
