Off the sidelines worried about the excess skin

Recommended Posts

Well the time has come, I have been standing on the sidelines and now am about to take the plunge. Just had my psych and nutritionist visit. Will have the sleep study(what is that about) Tuesday. I do have a question, what is the deal with the excess skin after you drop the pounds. Any body had problems with that. I am about five ten and 324 will I end up looking like one of those Chinese dogs with all the loose skin.

Having the gastric to get some help with the diabetes the skin thing is what I am worried about.

Any insight would be a great help.

Thanks

Anthony

I was around 5'7" and 266 to start. I have a few areas that are not as tight as I'd like but I'm still working hard and they continue to improve. Overall I'm very happy with my skin recovery.

It's one of those things that will be different from person to person. Good exercise, hydration, and sleep are all very important so you can achieve as good of results as possible.

Not over thinking, just that is all you have to think about right now. I dont mean that specifically but until you have your surgery, all you have to think about is what about this and what ifs. At every step a new set of problems, questions and things to worry about come up. I am in the bandster hell phase with 1 fill, no restriction, still hungry and wonder what the hell I am doing.

I just keep saying to myself all the time it is a PROCESS and need to be patient. It has worked for so many before that have the same issues with food as I do so I am confident I will be successful eventually and everything will work out.

back to your other question. The sleep study is to establish additional co-morbidity factors. if you are overweight you probably have sleep apnea and stop breathing many times/hr at night.

I have been on a Cpap for this for over 10 years and am very much looking forward to getting rid of it. IT SUCKS BIG TIME. but I dont get a good sleep without it. if they determine you need on now but are going to be losing weight permanently, I would consider using O2 temporally till you dont need it any more instead of getting the Cpap machine.

I too was on CPAP for 10 long years. While it did save my life, I'd agree it WAS a sucking drag.

After transitioning OFF it however, it took a while to adapt to the incredible QUIETNESS of the night....

You mean instead of thinking Darth Vader was in the room with you

can hardly wait!

Doc gave me the OK to wait until after surgery to get the machine if needed. Gave me the 411 on the risks. I have an O2 machine that my mom never uses may give it a try. One unexpected side effect is because of all the test done prior to operation I found other things that needed fixin. Have gall stones they are going remove gallbladder and have hernia causing reflux they are going to fix that also during operation.

Not much of a drinker but they told me one drink can make you drunk (I am getting the bypass).

Thanks for the info

Anthony

I started this journey over 400 lbs. My doctors have told me that my skin has lost its elasticity in some areas so I will have lots of excess when I hit my goal weight (next year hopefully).

I am very excited about having cosmetic surgery to get it taken care of as well as fix some other minor problems. The cosmetic surgeons I am interested in are very clear that they will only operate on normal weight individuals and if you are a WLS patient that you must be at a stable and healthy weight.

So this is just more incentive to get to goal.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
