Is it true that you have to wait two minutes after every bite?

Recommended Posts

I believe I was told by my doctor's post op list that once I start solid food I must chew 25-30 times and then wait 2 minutes before the next bite. Is this true? Am I going to have to wait 2 minutes before every bite of my solid food life? I do stop eating at 30 minutes which is reasonable but I hate waiting two minutes to get the next bite. Oh by the way, I've been on solid foods for 2 weeks now.

That is absurd... I can see putting your fork/spoon down after every bite and chewing 25-30 times but not waiting 2 min to take another bite. you wouldnt even finish your meal you would be eating for over 1 hour and doesnt that defeat the purpose of having the band if your gonna be eating all the time??

Amen sister, that's what I'm saying. I wonder if he meant it just for meat though. That would still be annoying.

There was a similar thread previously where someone had been told by her Dr that she had to wait 3 minutes between bites.

I don't think that whoever it was posted after her surgery to say if she was maaging to stick to that and how.

As the others have said the whole idea is absurd. imagine how many bites you would manage to eat before you had to give up eating. Not many as lots of Dr's recommend that you shouldn't carry on eating for longer than 20 minitues as by then your pouch has already started emptying and you will be able to eat more!

Just chew well, and eat slowly.

I'd liken it more to eating like a lady. No more gulping like a pig.

I find it quite easy becuase in Australia, we eat with our fork in our left hand ALL the time. Its customary to cut off a piece of food, eat from the fork in your left hand, then cut another piece when you're ready. We dont cut up lots of bits of food, then switch the fork to the right hand and fork it up. So we have that natural wait time, whilst we cut another piece. That's all I've ever really needed to do, apart from chew better than I used to.

Several times during a meal I will put down both knife and fork for a bit of a breather.

But really, its just eating with nice table manners and not like a piggie at the trough. Nothing as complicated as timing bites. And it becomes second nature anyway after a while.

These kind of recommendations are likely an attempt to get people used to slowing down rather than long-term eating habits. It takes a conscious effort to cut smaller pieces and eat slower after you've been used to shoveling food in.

I agree that these recommendations are so we PRACTICE and become COGNIZANT of what we are putting in our mouths. Because when we get fills and when we actually get tight, the band tells you how long to wait - don't worry. You won't be counting 90 seconds off in your head, you will be FEELING the food, stop and then hopefully pass. When the doctor tells you something to do BEFORE you have more than 4ccs in your band, DO IT. It is for practice. It will help you later.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
