I had my surgery on March 16 2010. I weighed 280 and am now down to 228. I had the 9cc realize band and am on my 4th fill to 5.5 cc's. I have good restriction, and seems like it has been good since the first fill. At the end of each month I feel like I can used a fill. Total lost is 51. My goal is 130 as I am 5' 7". If I start to look too skinny before I get to my goal, I will stop there. The scariest thing I have had happen so far is after my last fill. I had eaten a little bit of hamburger that was cooked small and soft. I started to vomit in my sleep and didn't realize till my bf woke me up. My short term goals are to lose 4 to five pounds over the next 2 weeks and another 4 to five over the next 2 for a total of 8 to 10 by the 1st of October. I have a goal of another 35 lbs to be gone by Christmas. Looking forward to meeting many new people in my situation.

Hi Lori!

Welcome to LBT, great place to be for support.

You are doing awesome! Keep up the good work.

Loose cooked hamburger was behind one of my worst stuck episodes. I spoke with my surgeon the next day, and he said that even thought we break it up to small pieces, hamburger is very hard on banded folk. It has a lot of gristle in it and is hard to chew, so we tend to swallow pieces that are bigger than we realize.

When I then did a web search on it, I found hamburger right up there on the list of things most likely to get stuck.

I rarely eat it any longer, and when I do it is with much caution, tiny bites, and lots of chewing. I find I do better with ground turkey if we are having something like Chili. If we are doing burgers, I'll get a veggie burger, then I just have to contend with the bun, which I normally use as a handle and tear away as I eat. Kind of wasteful, but at least I get the burger experience!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
