Pain in left shoulder

Recommended Posts

I had my lapband surgery Monday (5 days ago). I woke up with pain in my left shoulder and it doesn't seem to be going away. The doctor says it could just be from the air put into the body for the procedure. But a hiatal hernia was found during the procedure and my doctor corrected it. Anyways, my question or concern is....is this something I will have forever?

I'm doing well the only pain I have is this weird pain in my left bicept and my left hand where the IV was. I dont know if it is an infection or just more gas....I am now on pureed food and am addicted to this cheddar broccoli Soup I made yesterday. I know I need to increase my Water intake but honestly I get so full off of my Protein drink and Soup that I have to force myself to drink Water, at least i think I got 1 liter in today

I am the same way with my Water. I was good the first few days...but not so much today. I figure the Protein is more important. And my shoulder seems to hurt more if I force water down. I'm anxious to be all healed up and get started on a regular regiment.

First let me say congrats on getting banded. I was banded a little over 5 months ago and I can still remember the pain you are referring. I also had a hiatal hernia repaired at the time of band placement. It honestly took about a month for the pain in my left shoulder to be completely gone. It got better everyday though. The first week I honestly thought I had made the worst mistake of my life. After 2-3 weeks I only had the pain when I ate too fast or got too full. The pain comes from irritation of the sciatic nerve in the abdomen caused by your diaphram that was repaired. The radiating pain from shoulder down your arm is the same pain you get if your having a heart attack, because the same nerve is irritated in the abdomen. You may also experience pain in the left jaw. Hang in their Chicky. I have lost 60 pounds since being banded 5 months ago and am over half way to goal.

Thanks Cmom! Congrats on your weight loss! I can't wait for the left pains to stop. It is only super painful at times...but for the most part, it's just ANNOYING! I am down 5 lbs already so that helps excepting the pain. But I am still ready to be all healed up! I hope it doesn't last much longer. Thanks again, for all the advice!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
