I was supposed to have surgery on the 24th, but due to complications with a poisonous spider bite, it was postponed until the 7th of September. I am really concerned about how well this is going to help me. I mean, I stopped almost all processed sugar three weeks ago, eat 1000-1200 kcal a day (approx) and am crabby all the time. I use food to keep me from being angry, frustrated, afraid, etc. Now that I am not eating all the time, all day long, I don't know what to do with all of these emotions coming out. Banding isn't going to make this better. any advice? Oh, and I am already in therapy.

Hi there Machan,

Why not talk to your therapist about it? Perhaps he/she can help you come up with a plan or maybe increase the number of sessions you have until you can sort through some of the feelings. I do the same thing, stuff away my feelings with food. I'm in therapy too and I really think that a therapist would understand about emotional eating and help you work through it.

Best wishes,

I don't know if this applies, but before I was banded (March 2010) I was cranky when dieting. Since the band I'm not feeling deprived, and therefore not cranky.

Good luck, Sharon

I go to OA (overeaters anonymous) it is a free program similar to AA. www.oa.org

Being around other compulsive overeaters who are able to share their stories, help me deal with my emotions.:) Noone understands us like other overeaters and this is our issue.....food....it's what we do to numb us, when we are not "using" food the emotions just bubble up. It helps....give it a try...

I'm the same way, I eat ALL day long and when I dont..LOOK OUT! I'm trying not to rely on food anymore it was hard at first but then I found a hobby. I love to draw and of course I like clothes...im a girl. SO i started designing clothes and soon Im planning on starting a website....Just finding a hobby to keep your hands busy and your mind off of the food will help and its a good way to express what you're feeling at that moment. Hope that helped.

Cheers!

My therapist suggested, strongly, that I find OA meetings. I have two kids, which gives me a good excuse to not go, but I have done some online meetings. They help some, but not much. I really just feel out of control emotionally since I am so hungry all the time. I don't like this, neither does my family. I just want to cry all the time. I just need to vent. There is a local meeting tomorrow, I plan on going.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
