I have my appointment with a psychiatrist on Monday. Can anyone tell what the appointment is about? Just want to be prepared!

Thanks!

Mine was very, very simple. Took about half an hour... she was also the dietitian, so these questions might differ. Basically she wanted to know how long I had prepared for the surgery, what I knew about the surgery, what I knew I had to change once I had the surgery, my family's and my own medical history, my family's and my own mental health history. Stuff like that.

My husband, on the other hand, went to a different psychologist last year for his bypass eval and he had to take that 300+ question personality test. So I'm crossing my fingers you get an easy eval. :)

My appt with the psychologist was excellent. I was sent a lengthy questionnaire beforehand to complete and we went over it together at the appointment. Basically, she was making sure that I was mentally and emotionally in the right place for having this major, life-altering procedure done.

The questionnaire asked many questions relating to behaviours associated with all the various eating disorders. It also delved into when I eat and why I eat. There was a section on moods and emotions (looking for signs of depression, I gathered) and questions about relationships and support systems.

In a nutshell, it was determining that I was the right person having the procedure done for the right reasons at the right time.

I found it a very open, positive, and affirming process and I look forward to seeing her again in three months.

And to be honest, I'm really glad it wasn't just a quick glance-over. I went into surgery feeling very very sure that I was doing what was best for me.

All the very best to you on your journey.

Mine was on the phone for 1 1/2 hours. He asked about any depression past or present, thoughts of suicide, addictions past and present, food issues, how you think the surgery will change your life, etc.... It was easy and I think they want to be sure you have family or loved ones that will support you and not feel jealous when you lose the weight and that you are not some crazy loon that has deeper issues than being in love with food.

I just had mine this past week. It was a series of personality questions on a computer in the psychologist's office. Not a big deal at all...it took about 45 minutes. I should have the results back in about a week or so...fingers crossed :)

I'm sure your evaluation will go well...good luck!

For my appointment I had to fill out a bunch of questions before I saw her and then the appointment with her lasted about 45 minutes and then I had to take a personality test, a mmpi, it was about 650 questions. And then I have a follow up appointment with her again in a couple of weeks. She just basically asked me the same as the other replies, depression, major stresses in my life, etc. It was pretty in depth but I think I should be ok. Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
