Questions for the Dietitian

Recommended Posts

So I have my first meeting with the dietitian Monday. I have no idea what to expect. My fear is that I will be taking in so much information and then walk out with tons of questions I need answers to. Did you have any questions after your first visit that you wish you would have asked after your session was over? Do you have any tips that will prepare me for my session?

I was extremely overwhelmed after my first appt with my nutritionist. One thing I should have asked is what is their recommended caloric intake AFTER surgery.

I didn't ask and it was no where in my materials. All it said was 3 - 1/2 cup meals per day. Well, I was doing that and only hitting about 250 calories per day. I had stopped losing weight about 2 weeks after surgery, presumably because my body was in starvation mode. Came on here and everyone told me that was insanely low and they were around 800-1200. So, I asked my nutritionist and she said I should be around 800. I'm getting there, but still struggling a bit. I'm getting about 600 in, I'm just not hungry and can't eat anymore, but I FINALLY dropped another pound after about 10 days of nothing.

Make sure you have a good layout of your food stages after surgery too. How long on Clear liquids, soft, etc.

You also want to ask what type of Vitamins you should be taking and also the amount of protien you need during each stage after your surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
