would you have surgery if you had infection?

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled for surgery 8/26-this Thursday. I finished an antibiotic a couple of days ago for possible strep. I feel pretty bad. Flu-ish, nauseous (liquid pre-op not helping that!) and fever. I literally woke up all night soaked I was so sweaty.

My Dr just called to say my test results also show urinary infection& I need to start another antibiotic.

I phoned my surgeon who said we will talk again Wednesday to see how I am feeling. If I feel better we can proceed.

As much as rescheduling the surgery would suck I am worried about proceeding w/it even if I do feel better.

What would you do?

If you have an infection of any kind, many surgeons won't touch you till you're all clear. (not even with a 10-foot scalpel!)

If I had an infection, I would certainly not want to any kind of surgery. Your body is trying to get rid of something icky inside of you and it is a little weaker than normal. You want to give yourself the best chance of a successful surgery, right? :)

From what i have been told if you have fever they will not do surgery on you and if you already have an infection they will want it cleared up before they continue....just concentrate on getting better right now you dont want to jepordize your over all health.

It would suck much worse if your band got infected and had to be removed shortly after putting it in. Error on the side of caution. :) I would make sure I was 100% beforehand.

I agree that you should probably err on the side caution and postpone it. You should be 100% going into any surgery.

Keep us posted and I hope you feel better soon. =)

:cursing:darn!! I am on the 26th too. As much as it sucks to wait I think being as sick as you have been , it would be wise. I had a cold about a week ago but never any fever and never developed a cough. Every once in a while I have a little phlem and maybe by Thursday I won't even have that at all. I am definately at the very tail end of it so hopefully everything will go as scheduled. Get better soon:)

I am going to postpone :):(

My Dr didn't pressure me to proceed, just said it was an option. I know postponing is the right thing to do. Besides being mentally prepared for it to be this Thursday it was good timing in general. Being up and better when school starts kids, "real" food by Thanksgiving (not telling anyone about band). I would be lying if I said this was not a little depressing. I know it is for the best but cried a lot yesterday.

Thanks for the support & I will post my new surgery date.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
