Hook'mHorns 0 Posted August 22, 2010 Hi everyone! I am pre-op and new to this forum. My sleep study is scheduled for this week. I am nervous because in order for my insurance to pay for the lap-band®, I have to have sleep apnea (since I didn't have any of the other co-morbidities). I think I have it, because I have always felt like I had it, and also I went on WebMD and I have all the symptoms except for the breathing lapses. My symptoms are: Excessive daytime sleepiness. Scored 15 on the scale.< br /> Waking with an unrefreshed feeling after sleep, having problems with memory and concentration, feeling tired, and experiencing personality changes. Morning or night headaches. Heartburn or a sour taste in the mouth at night. Loud snoring. Actually, I do have the breathing lapses, just not consistently...(maybe only like twice a week am I awakened by a lapse in breathing.) My question is: Is there anyone out there who has been diagnosed with sleep apnea WITHOUT having consistent breathing lapses as a symptom?

I think you will find that you don't remember these lapses as they only take a few seconds to bring you up out of a sound sleep and you go right back to sleep. The ones that awake you are the ones that you actually have stopped breathing for a longer period and then you actually make more of a choking sound which brings you totally out of the dead sleep and you remember it. The others you will awake but actually don't remember. You might be quite shocked to see how many times an hour you stop breathing and not know it. I have sleep apnea and the only thing I do is snore loud. Actually don't have any other symptoms. Mine is mild, but still have it. Don't think you will have any problems. Most people don't even remember breathing lapses.
amanda1112 0 Posted August 22, 2010 My husband has sleep apnea (diagnosed several years ago) and has VERY pronounced lapses. He will stop breathing for several seconds and then has a big "gasp" to catch his breath. He would often wake himself up due to the gasps. It was pretty obvious that he had it! When I scheduled my sleep study, I thought I either wouldn't have it or would have a very mild case since my husband said that he didn't detect any lapses when I slept. (I do snore though!) However, based on the study, I actually had a pretty severe case. They noted that I stopped breathing 54 times in 60 minutes. I didn't believe it! But my doctor said that the lapses were short and rapid; they happen so fast that they aren't noticeable. My body "wakes" up or reacts to the lapses, but I don't become conscious when it happens. I would bet that a lot of people have it (though be it a mild case) and don't even know it!

I didn't notice breathing lapses but then again I have a very mild case. I only stop breathing 8 times an hour. I snored and had the excessive daytime sleepiness. I was just diagnosed this month and actually went to go to do my titration this past Friday.
