Hi all!

Like most, I just found out I need the 6 month medically supervised diet for insurance. I've attended a LapBand seminar and will meet my surgeon on September 1st. I'm extremely borderline with my barely 35 BMI so here's what I'm asking...do I gain/lose/or maintain during this 6 month diet? I'm excited as my journey begins yet hoping I can endure the "hoops".

Hope you're all well.

I haven't been through this but I'm pretty sure I've seen people post that you shouldn't gain weight. Losing could make you ineligible for surgery so I guess the name of the game is to maintain. ()

That's a real bummer. I'm waiting for my approval at the moment but I don't expect good news. :

If it makes you feel better I ended up having 8.5 months between first consult and surgery. I believe insurance uses the weigh in from your first appointment. Many doctors requires a weigh loss before they will do the surgery though at your BMI that may not be an issue. I was told to loose 10% body weight and ended up loosing 15%.

So did they tell you what you need to do in regards to losing or maintaining? I saw my surgeon today and was able to get a date set for surgery! Im so excited!!! November 12!!! That will give the insurance almost a month to review and process everything. Yes, good luck to all of us! It will be a great journey!

I asked just that same question in the first 2 meetings I had at the dr. office. I am borderline and I was worried that if I lost weight that I wouldn't quailify. What they told me both times is that they record your beginning weight and that is what they follow going forward with your paperwork.

I would confirm that with your care team but hopefully they have the same information!

Hello all,

I am having my surgery done on the 26th I was approved by insurance last week and I did not lose any weight during my 6 month diet. I maintained, which I am actually thrilled about, but didn't lose any. I have BCBSTX.

good luck to everyone!!

I had to stay at least 40 bmi and if I had lost 5 pounds during my 6 month pre op stuff, I would have gone under it. My goal during the 6 month pre op was to stop gaining. I had been steadily gaining since I had a hysterectomy, then when I quit smoking I started gaining more. Maybe you can talk to them about it being about not gaining and learning to eat like a banded person?

Good luck

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
