Milk and Protein Drinks

Recommended Posts

So I am on my pre op diet (Surgery is 26th!) and I am on Protein Shakes and Clear liquids. I bought both pre mixed Protein drinks and just the powder you mix with milk/water.

Question I have is it ok to be mixing the Protein Powder with milk? I only have about 16oz in the morning and the rest of the day is the Protein shakes in a can. I have been doing good on the diet and don't want to ruin it with the milk.

My official answer will be to talk with your Nut. In post op I am making my Protein shakes with Fat Free Milk rather than Water which adds 90 calories. It does add calories and carbs but also Protein. During the first week I was at around 650-700 calories a day which is'nt really that high. I have also been walking at the gym every day (since 3 days post op); and have lost 10 pounds since the surgery. I am currently on day 8.

Are you exercising? I think that is a huge plus in your preop and personally would not be terribly worried about 100 calories from milk if you are burning 500-600 exercising.

Thanks honk and mskitten! I thought it was ok but since I was doing so good with the diet I would have been so mad at myself if I found out after that I shouldn't be doing it. With saying that I still will prolly call my surgeon on monday to find out cause I do know every doc is different in what they want

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
