Hypothetical question.

Hi guys, first post. In the pre-op stage.

I have a question that may come into play for me and I was just curious about some other peoples' opinions.

I'm just starting my Lap Band process. I've been to see my PCP, going to see the surgeon today, scheduling my psych/diet consult for next week hopefully. My insurance said that if I had a current BMI of 40, approval wouldn't be an issue. (Fingers crossed on that one.)

So I'm going to Mexico on Sept. 25-Oct 2. Now if it were you and you happened to be scheduled for surgery, say, at the end of August or beginning of September knowing you had a vacation coming up ... would you go ahead with the surgery to get it over and done with or would you put it off, hoping you could get in soon after the vacation?

I don't really think this is going to be an issue with me, but I'm just curious as to what other people would do. Personally, I would get it done.

What would you do?

I'd have it done as long as I had enough time to recover/get off of the post-op diet. I wouldn't want to go on vacation hurting or having to deal with doing a mushies or liquid diet.< /span>

Knowing what I know now, I'd go ahead and do it before the vacation. The recovery is pretty easy, and 25 or so days out, you'll be fine. Also, even if you're on "mushies" by the time of your trip, it's not that hard to find things to eat. And hey. . you'll probably be in Bandster Hell during your trip (read: able to eat and hungry, with no restriction yet), so it's not likely that you'll even have a problem getting stuck or finding food you can eat while you're away.

Congratulations on your decision! I think you'll be glad to get going with the band sooner than later. Be sure to take lots of "before" pics and your measurements if you haven't already. You will want them later.

Best,

Catherine

I finished all my testing by July 30th. I could have had surgery beginning of August. However we have a 9 day cruise Sept. 9 - 18. NO WAY I would risk having the surgery before the cruise. I have been fat over 40 years. What's another couple of weeks? I want my doctor who knows me, not a stranger in a strange place should something go wrong.

Thanks for all your replies guys. My pre-surgery tests and such are going so smooth, it's scary. I had my pcp visit on Thursday, surgeon consult Friday, psych test and dietitian meeting (same person) on Monday. So I actually COULD get my surgery before I head to Mexico but I think I'll wait.

Although I have no clothes that currently fit me, I guess that's not the end of the world. Just one of those things I want done NOW because I'm so nervous. :']

But we have an all inclusive dealy thing at our hotel so I wanna get my money's worth.:smile:

I had surgery on 6/28 and we went on a week long trip to Florida on 7/23. It was wonderful!!! It's the only vacation I have ever taken where I didn't gain weight!!! I enjoyed very small portions and loved every minute of it.

Good luck to you!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
