You are probably in ketosis. It is where you aim to be on the Atkins Diet as you are burning lots of fat and sparing the Protein. It give you lousy tasting breath. Look it up on the internet. It is interesting. You also lose you appetite when you are in ketosis. You lose the fat in your liver first - the goal of the preop diet.

Froggie....I looked it up and I think you are right. It's a good thing right?? It has gotten increasingly strong. From what I read it means that your body is burning fat, is there a down side to that? You just changed my entire feeling about my metal mouth!!!

I don't think there is a downside, but different nutritionists might argue the point. My doctor, and many other from what I read on here, request or even require a high Protein, low carb diet preop. If you have been eating a lot of carbs, you will probably go into ketosis. From what I have read, it is not harmful and will result in the quickest weight loss and the least hunger of most any diet. I did a one month preop and did very high Protein and very low carbs in order to get ready for my surgery. I lost 23 pounds. I think it really got me ready as I lost weight in my liver, had a great surgery, recovered easily, and was not hungry.

On a high protein. low carb diet you may have headaches, dizziness, and hunger for the first 3-4 days and then your hunger and head aches go away and you feel really good.

When is your surgery? I had mine in April and am feeling great. I have stopped taking Metformin for diabetes, cut my high blood pressure meds back, and am exercising regularly and not hurting all the time like I used to. It is great!

I've found that I get a metallic taste in the back of my mouth about 20-30 minutes after eating my Calcium chew(s). I only started taking Calcium after surgery, so I don't know if it would have done it before or not.

I get ketosis-mouth sometimes if I'm eating little-to-no carbs for several days, but it's not metallic for me, just yuck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
