anyone opt for a low profile port ?

Recommended Posts

curious if anyone opted for a low profile port in initial surgery (rather than a revision w/tummy tuck). I will be banded 8/26 and will be getting a low profile port. My bmi is 31 so my Dr said it was an option. Just curious if anyone had any thought on this.

Also, even for those who had it revised at goal- how is it? Is there a bump..can you see and feel it?

Thanks!

Yes, I asked for a low profile port. My BMI was 32 and I didn't want to have something sticking out after I lost my weight. I've lost 40 lbs and you can't see a thing. I have to really push down on my stomach to feel it. I was afraid it would be hard for my surgeon to find for the fills becuase it was smaller but it wasn't a problem at all. Good luck!! I do remember him telling me to remind him on the day of surgery because he might forget and do what he's used to. My last memory before surgery is being on the OR table telling everyone "Don't forget my small port!!" and I was out!! You may want to remind him the day of also!

I also have a low profile port. By the time my surgery rolled around I was down to a BMI of 33 and my surgeon opted to put in the low profile port. I didn't actually know which port I had until the PA giving me my second fill commented on the port....you can see it on flouro.

You can't see my port, but I can feel it if I press on my belly.

Good luck with your surgery!

I really wanted the low profile port, but I didn't know about it until after the surgery. The current port causes some trouble when I try to sleep because I sleep on my side and it digs into the muscle.

But when I asked my surgeon (or, actually, the nurse, since I haven't been able to talk to my surgeon since the surgery), the nurse said "Oh. Those must be really new. We don't do those"

Wha????

I actually requested the low profile and initially my dr said they use then for revisions w/tummy tucks. After we discussed it further, we decided the low profile was a good option. My nurse actually said it was a great idea because I was so small-HA! small!

It does seem like they prefer the regular port cuz it is quicker for them to access. They will actually have to feel around for mine.

If I can possibly-I want to avoid a Tummy Tuck.< /p>

I have one, and I can hardly feel it so far. I'm just over halfway to goal, so we'll see how it goes as more weight comes off. I think my surgeon uses them exclusively, as both I and my friend (who was banded by him the same day as I was, but at a higher BMI) have the low-profile ports.

I just had my consult today and I specificaally asked for th elow profile because i didnt want ahuge bulge after weigh loss. My Dr told me that in ppl with a BMI under 42 they usually use the low profle ports. so Yay me! If its an option for you I would go with it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
