Support group meetings?

Recommended Posts

Does your doctor offer a support group? If so do you go to the meetings?

What are they like?

My doctor offers them and requires that I attend so many a year in order to get my fills. Right now though I have no clue when I'll be able to make one. I only have one babysitter and her mom is in ICU right now.

Amanda,

My dr offers a monthly support group that is led by the dietician. I have been 2 times, both right before my surgery. I have found them to be very helpful, I liked being able to talk to people that live near me that have been thru the same thing; they have offered so much help and advice. The leader has a brief informational session on things from how to prepare certain foods, to exercise; then the group is allowed to ask each other questions etc. Depending on the age of your child, some people bring their children to our group, they sit and color and have been no bother.

My doc. offers a monthly support group run by the psychologist. I find them very helpfull. There are a group of vetrans (18 month post-op for more). They read an article and discuss it. For the second half it is open to the non-vetrans.

I went to my first support group meeting this past Tuesday. Each hospital has their own support group and the one I went to was run by the bariatric coordinator for the hospital. For the first hour the girls did a Zumba exercise class which I did not participate in and then the last hour the girls just talked about any problems they were having. Next meeting we are all bringing our favorite holiday recipes and coming up with a menu then it will be turned into the dietician and chef for the hospital and they are going to come up with ways to make them bariatric friendly. Then the next bariatric cooking class they are going to make some of the items that we brought in! They have the cooking classes 2 times a month!

The hospital where I had my surgery offers 2 support groups p/mo: one for those banded 1 yr or under, the other for 1 yr+ bandsters. I was banded just over 1 yr ago, and have not gone to the later group yet. I have gone sporatically to the first.

I found it very helpful going the first few months after surgery, but then found that most of the time the issues are the same, and the same few people tend to monopolize the conversation. However, I usually did pick up some new tip.

They also offer a nutrition class once a month. I enjoy these more.

The best part of both of these is meeting other bandsters and talking with them befor or after the sessions.

I'll probably try the 1yr+ group soon.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
