Two years on... and a few problems

Recommended Posts

I was banded on July 19th 2008 and for the most part, everything's gone very well but every so often I get terrible problems with digesting anything - soft food, liquid, you name it. It doesn't always happen just after a fill either - sometimes very randomly.

I go to my surgeon and he removes a bit of liquid each time but does anyone else have a similar problem? or could anyone suggest what might be causing it?

thanks very much,

Lesley

I have had to go back for an unfill the last 2 fills. I just had one recently and have had some trouble, but today has been good. I am hoping it was swelling that is subsiding. I know how frustrating it is! I went from being very hungry to way to tight.

You may want to see your surgeon. I have struggled with indigestion/ acid reflux for a year, followed by several gall bladder attacks. My G.P. sent me for an ultrasound and pronounced me "fine". When I went to see my band surgeon, he said I needed my gall bladder out. Had that surgery two weeks ago, and doctor discovered band had slipped. Back into surgery to fix band, and he discovered (and fixed) a hiatus hernia. I really thought all the problems were caused by my gall bladder, and wasted a year trying to convince my G.P. there was a problem. Long story short: See your surgeon!

I don't know if that's common, but two of my friends who've been banded for five years have both had to get a few unfills in the last couple of years, as opposed to fills. I was banded Dec 08, and can see myself getting an unfill in the future; I'm fine for the most part, but get inexplicably tight sometimes, other times very loose. I keep losing though, which is the main reason I might get an unfill; I'm thrilled with the continued weight loss, but don't want to lose TOO much (which is a problem I'm happy to have to think about!).

I had a slight unfill yesterday for the same reason. I feel so much better and I am determined not to gain any weight. For the first time in 5 months though, I am able to follow band rules and actually eat three meals. So nice... My daughter also has trouble getting the right amount of Fluid in her band. I think she is in her sweet spot at the moment though so all is well. Unfortunately all of this is a learning experience for all of us. I believe I am just now in my sweet spot and I am almost to goal... Go figure.... Hugs!!

I've been trying to figure out this fill thing, too. I had a fill in January. I was too tight, but dealt with it for a month and had a slight unfill in February. Now, I seem to be getting tighter and I contemplating another slight unfill. Is this common? I always seemed to need a fill when I lost 20 lbs or so. Now, I seem to get tighter as I lose. I'm confused.

As you lose weight, the fatty tissues disappear on you internal organs as well. Just a thought....

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
