was postop pain terrible???

Recommended Posts

i am getting banded on August 26th and getting a bit nervous. was wondering how many had bad post-op pain? or not much? How long before you felt kinda normal? Do people feel different because of the pain or meds they have to take for the pain? and what about the "gas" pain? thanks for any feedback:smile:

It is hard for people to compare their pain thresholds. Just remember to get up and walk as much as you can as soon as you can. The gas pain is, IMHO, worse than the incision pain for sure.

Pain is a completely individual thing. What I or anyone else felt may or may not have any relevance to your situation. That said, I know for me the pain that I experienced really doesn't matter at all now. I suspect that you will be uncomfortable in the moment, but a couple months down the road it will all be "no big deal" as you are well on your journey to health. Best of luck to you!:)

in addition to walking for gas, I found that Gas-X strips were a Godsend to deal with gas pain!

My post op pain felt like I did sit ups over and over and over again. I had absolutaly no gas pains. I am not 5 days post op and it still feels like ive done a lot of sit ups. It really isnt THAT bad but it still hurts.

I had 2 previous c-sections and my lap-band was a walk in a park compared to my c-sections.

It wasn't the most fun I ever had, but as surgical experiences go, it was a piece of cake.

Don't be shy about using pain meds if you need them; they can help you be more active (don't overdo, just walk a lot--it helps!), and there's no need to tough it out just because lots of people tell you it doesn't hurt.

(I think it's kind of like childbirth; we get something good out of it, so we tend to minimize the pain afterwards. For me, the pain was short-lived and much, much less than I expected.)

Thanks for posting this. I'm wondering too. I was imagining it to be about like my gall bladder surgery and then wondered if I was making light of it and should prepare myself for worse than that. These posts help.

I was on pain killers in the hospital for about 15 hours; after that I moved to liquid tylenol. I have not had gas pains in the shoulder. From the surgery/protein diet I am gassy. First or two felt like I had done too many sit ups but 3 day much better. I must say that my incisions look better than some that I found online. No bruising (and I was taking aspirin) until the surgery. Also I am not very hungry. My doctor says to have a serving of broth and then a Jello; and an hour later the Protein Shake. Some times I have to push my self to get the Protein.< /p>

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
