Fell off Lap Band wagon, wants back on, but found out I'm pregnant

Recommended Posts

Hello Fellow LapBanders,

I havent been on here in a looong time. So I'll make a long dramatic story short. So I was banded in July, 2008 and have lost approximately 22 lbs with this thing. I honestly didn't understand the nutritional classes, not that I could really go to them. At that time, I had just gotten a new job, a new car and a new apartment and my only means of support system, my mother, had just moved 13 hours away to St. Louis with me still in Richmond, VA. (job related move). I just don't think I was in the right place to have the surgery then. After a year or so of fumbling through Band-om, I tried to talk my doc into switching my band out for a RNY. He said that I haven't tried hard enough and if I couldnt get this right, then the RNY would probably kill me. Ok Doc, gotcha, I'm a tough cookie and can respect a blunt answer.

Fast forward to Jan 2010 and I'm ready to get it in gear. Got a band fill, started eating better, and even started training for 10k in Richmond. Lost more inches than pounds really. But a week before the marathon, I fell down my steps in heels and sprained both of my ankles.

I decided to move to St. Louis to be with my mother and would move at the end of June 2010. At the beginning of June, I find out that I'm pregnant.

Soooo my question or discussion is.....I want to continue exercising but I'm worn out all the time. I know that exercising now will make delivery easier.....I dont know, I guess I just need some motivational help. It's been a rough last few years and with a baby on the way (by the way, I have 12 yr old twin boys already), things are going to be even more hectic.

I'm in a new city and am turning to my online community to help me out. Thanks in advance for your support and sorry for the long post. The next ones won't be so bad.

Peace and Blessings!

I am in a similar situation as you. I received my lapband in 2008 and quickly lost a few pounds. I don't know if I ever took it seriously. :smile2:

Anyway, when I did decide to get serious about my weight loss. I found out I was pregnant (August 2009). I delivered a healthy baby boy on April 1. During my pregnancy I ate whatever I wanted & I never gained a pound. THANK YOU LAPBAND!!!! At my deliver date I was -5 lbs from my initial appointment.

Now my son is 4 months old, its time for mama to get serious. Before my lapband surgery I was always on this website & day dreaming of the day I would be skinny.

Anyway, the last time I logged in was April 28, 2009. Not anymore! I've made a follow up with my doc to get a fill next week & I will start over.

I say all this, to tell you. You can start over during pregnancy. Or after pregnancy! Don't feel ashamed or embarassed of your progress thus far. You are not alone. Good luck & have a safe & healthy pregnancy.

P.S. I was so tired while I was pregnant. I didn't excersise one time. :)

Thanks so much Atl for responding. Sometimes, it seems like we are all alone out here when you hear so many successful stories. Since I found out I was pregnant in June, I'm actually down 3 pounds. I guess the change of environment helped. (The food in St. Louis tastes strange to me and forces me to cook and they have TONS of farmers markets.)

Thank you for the encouragement. I really dont feel like exercising at all. My boys (12 yrs) get me out the house by asking me to take walks around the neighborhood with them. But that's about it. After I drop my precious cargo, then we gone get it in gear

Congrats on your pregnancy...I got my band in Dec. 2008 I lost 50 lbs very slowly and in Feb 2009 my husband and I started trying to get pregnant..well we went through a lot of ups and downs and ended up having to be put on fertility meds and having a miscarriage..but we ended up getting pregnant again in..I am 34 weeks pregnant and have not got an unfill and have been perfectly fine..I weighed 210 in Dec and dropped down to 190..as of my last appointment I weigh 194..my advice to you right now is keep your fill in as long as you can..I really think that made a huge difference..I ate what I wanted and exercised as much as I could..which was basically swimming in my pool and walking the mall looking to buy baby stuff  I really think at this point in time being pregnant you shouldn't worry so much about your weight and just make sure your eating the right types of foods to keep your baby healthy..exercise when and if you can and trying swimming it is fantastic..it helps with all the horrible pains..good luck and keep us posted on your progress!!

Thanks aspen, I've been focusing on baby and not so much on me right now. I haven't had any problems with my band so far and I'm about 4 months in now. I have done my fair share of swimming and walking this year and I just hope to keep it up.

Congrats on the baby! They are indeed blessings from above

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
