Pre-Medicate prior to dental work

Recommended Posts

I forgot to add something else to my prior post, so this is a seperate one. (not related to the other anyway)

OK here goes, I read on this site to pre-medicate prior to dental work, my doc never told me that, but thank god for you guys. So last doctor visit I mentioned it to the doc and he said oh yeah let me give you something, so he writes the scrip and I go get it filled today. I thought he would give me liquid, but no he gives me a pill and says to just crush it. So I get to work and I look at the pills, I bought a pill crusher and they are not pills, they are capsules and if you read the paper the pharmacy gives you, it says not to break-them but I broke them anyway as this is what my doctor told me. I mushed up some banana and put it all in and oh my god!!! the awful taste, I almost died. There was no way to eat that, So I decided to make a shake and throw it all in that and again try to drink it and YUCK just as bad, so I throw it away and call the dentist to cancel for now until I can get in touch with my family doc. to get me a liquid. What was my surgeon thinking when he wrote that RX? Has anyone else had this experience and what did you do? I am alergic to penacillan and e-mician, so choices are limited. I really felt like a crazy person today at work with breaking these pills and mixing things up, my co-workers were rolling on the floor laughing at me, they said I looked like a druggie at my desk! Then I get home and tell my mom what happen and she said that some pills cannot be broken and you could die from consuming the insides as they are time-released. Made me feel great, however maybe the man above was watching over me, as I was not suppose to break them and consume!

banded 8/4/2005 53 pounds lost so far!

Sorry you had to go through all that! I guess it's just a lesson to all of us that we are going to have to watch out for ourselves. Yes, seems like the surgeon should have known, but apparently we can't rely on that. You can't ask too many questions! Cindy

Most antibiotics come in liquid form for kids. You'll have to put up with bubble gum flavor, which sounds a heck of alot better than what you had today, and you might have to drink 84 ounces at a time to get an adult dose (okay, that's an exaggeration) but you get the pic. It CAN be done. Docs are great, but it helps when you are VERY specific about what you need!!! Call the pharmacist first, see what's available to substitute, then call the doc back with what you need. Maybe that'll help.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
