My journey is beginning :)

Hey! I joined this site almost a month ago and have been sorta OCDish about reading as much as I can. I spoke to my family doctor three days ago about the surgery. He sent me for some labs and told me that he would get the referral for me. He was really impressed that I knew so much about the surgery and what to expect :)

Today I got a call from the surgeon's office and they told me that the first step I need to take with them is to attend an informational seminar. I am going September 8th at 11:30am to a seminar in Cedar Falls, IA. (Anybody else by chance going to this seminar?!) I'm nervous about it so my mom is going with me.

Hopefully I can get this surgery done ASAP because my mother (who will be my caretaker and also take care of my son while I recover) has to have surgery to have her knee replaced, and the doctor told her that her surgery would most likely happen before then end of September. So we want me to get my surgery and recover before she has hers since they say she will be laid up for a long time.

Welcome to the board...and I feel like you I want to get this done ASAP...I did attend my seminar already and it was very informational from the docs. point of view but be ready with any questions that you may have as they are really open to that. I hope your mother's surgery goes well also...be sure to keep us updated on her as well as your journey....

You might call your insurance company before then and find out what they require. Some insurance companies require different testing and such than others before surgery. If your primary doctor could send you for as many of the tests before you see the surgeon, you'd be ahead of the game. Some surgeon's require you to see a doctor they refer to though, so once you find out what your insurance company requires for testing call the surgeon's office and see if they require you to see anyone specific, if they do, find out who and see if your primary doc will refer you to them. That way you can go into the surgeon's office after the seminar ready to go. Since you aren't going to the seminar until September 8th and your Mother's surgery is probably gonna be at the end of September, you will be quite crunched for time there. The testing is what really seems to hold the process up.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
