question about fill port

Recommended Posts

as I get ready for the surgery I have many questions, after the surgery, say six months, how noticable is the fill port? will I be able to go shirt less with out everyone asking what the hell is that and will I will I still be able to swim with out getting it infected? I hear the only dumb question is the one you didn't ask anyone.:)

The port is under your skin. They access it with a needle/syringe for fills. (Don't worry -- it's no big deal.)

Ask all the questions you want. That's what we're all here for.

Good luck!

I'm assuming you're a guy. Depending on how much weight you lose, and exactly where the port is placed, eventually you may see a bump where it is. Some may notice it, others not. I can feel mine, and have been able since the surgery, but at this point, it isn't visibly noticable, not that I go around walking without shirts or anything. :)

Once the incision is completely healed, you shouldn't have to worry about it becoming infected. Not to say that something weird may happen (as it seems that there is always a story about someone's cousin's brother's aunt's friend's daughter whose port became infected).

I know when my surgeon does my fills, he always disinfects the area first before sticking the needles in (one is a pain med the other the fill needle).

You should be good!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
