Round 2 with Thyroid cancer

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I'm hoping there are others on here who have gone through this and can give me support/insight.

I had thyroid cancer 9 years ago and had my entire thyroid removed and have been on hormones since. Now that I'm almost at goal weight with the band, I've just found out my cancer is back and although I don't have a thyroid anymore it's classified as thyroid cancer and in the lymph nodes in my neck The surgeons are saying I need a total neck dissection and from what I've been reading the side effects of that are nasty. Has anyone here has any experience with that?

Hey moonbeam,

I've been browsing the forums tonight and saw your post. I'm sorry to hear you have to go through surgery and treatment again. I too have had thyca, found AFTER a total thyroidectomy two years ago, but fortunately did not affect the lymph nodes and every scan I've had since has been clear. I had met a couple of people in a support group I used to attend that had to have the neck dissection to remove lymph nodes after the cancer came back (I think in both cases it was like after 10 years or more?) Sorry I don't know too much about the side effects, etc, other than they both had RAI again afterwards. You will be in my prayers, moon, and please send me a message if you ever want to talk or anything :)

Also, you have done something for me.... I am at the beginning of my journey- i.e. insurance "hoops" to get approved for surgery- and was concerned about the whole thyroid and Synthroid thing and how it affects the effectiveness of the band. Your success has encouraged me, and btw congrats on getting to your goal! :)

God bless,

Susan

I haven't had thyroid cancer, but my mother did, twice. She had a fast and full recovery from her second surgery, and no recurrence for the remainder of her life.

I hope you bounce back as well and completely as she did.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
