It all begins with a choice...

Recommended Posts

Hi! My name is Tracy, and my choice is to have a surgery that will change my life. About seven years ago I went to a seminar about gastric bypass surgery and then approached my doctor about it. I was pretty much laughed out of the office (or at least that was my perception, being that this is a very sensitive and personal subject!) and went back to trying it on my own. As each year passed more weight was packed on.

Fast forward to present time...new doctor, new outlook, and I just about dropped off the table when she gave me a referral for a lap band consultation. I guess there really is a right time for everything, and this is MY time.

I went for my first consultation with the surgeon last week. She gave me a long list of further consultations and testing that I need to do. Right now I need to find out which tests are considered "diagnostic tests" and will be covered with the initial referral. Then I'll get additional referrals for all other items on the list. Once that is said and done I wait for the second meeting with the surgeon. I believe it's about 6-8 weeks after that for surgery, providing everything is approved.

I've been checking out all the information on this site. I'm amazed at everyone's stories and honesty about the process. I love seeing before and after pictures and taking in everyone's experiences. You all inspire me! Thank you!

Hi Tracy,

I had a similar experience when I approached my PCP two years ago. He very clearly explained to me that I was fat because 1) I ate like a pig (yes, his exact words) and 2) I was lazy. He told me he would never refer any overweight person for the surgery because those were the only possible reasons for a person to be overweight. I felt humiliated and decided to try to do it on my own and avoid doctors for the rest of my life :). Two years later and the same size as before, I have a new doctor who actually agreed that this surgery might be the best thing for me. I actually cried in relief... I had geared myself to be a total witch to get the referral, but thankfully I didn't have to be. I just started a 3 month supervised diet, but hopefully I'll be banded in November. Best of luck to you on your journey!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
