Question about pills that are too big...

Recommended Posts

I was told to cut all my pills in half which is fine except I take Prozac. It's a gelcap and can't be split. So I was told to open it and take the powder inside instead. Well I tried that and it was NASTY! I tried adding juice and splenda to it I even have a Flavor RX kit to flavor my kids medicines I tried that also and it was still way too bitter and nasty to take.

So my mom told me take it anyway it's gel it will dissolve. But if it gets stuck I will be in pain until it dissolves right?

I've been without it since Friday and I can really tell! How long will it be before I can swallow it again? I plan to call the surgeon and my PCP later and see what else we can work out.

my mom has been going to a weekly lap-band support group meeting (her surgery is going to be in july) and they all told her that gel caps usually dont have any problems being swallowed whole.

I have an appt with my doctor today so Im going to ask her about starting my Cymbalta back up and will let you know what she says. Its a capsule but it has beads inside and not the powder but I cant imagine it would be any different going down.

I would try to take it. I didn't have any issues taking any pills after surgery, but then again, that's just me. I think you've already had issues with pills? That prozac is a bit important!

I called the surgeon and they said I can swallow it whole again next week. For now they said to mix it with applesauce and splenda- it's just a no go it's too gross and bitter. I called my PCP and I'm waiting to see what she says. I must have my prozac.

I take prozac capsules and have since right after surgery with no problem. Try it. I get stuck with food sometimes but never with my capsules - even early in the AM.

They do make a liquid if you cannot tolerate it.

I ended up just swallowing it and it went down with no problems. They do make a liquid but it's $200 for a month's supply. My insurance won't cover the liquid at all.

I have been able to swallow my Prozac capsule since day 2. I am having trouble with the Tricor caplet though. It is a bit larger and the 1 time I took it it got stuck and I felt it there for hours. Needless to say, I haven't taken it since!

I should probably mention that I haven't had a fill yet. I was banded July 27th :-)

That's good to know about capsules, I have to start taking a antibiotic and he just gave me a smaller size but it is a bit of a worry since I get my second fill in the morning. I take the generic liquid prozac....does that cost that much or just the name brand. Hope everything works out but I don't think I would stay off that anti-depressant very long. Take care

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
