Do any of you take Prozac?

Recommended Posts

I've been on 40 mg for almost a year now. I was told after surgery to open the capsule and take the powder inside. Well I tried and it was nasty. I couldn't swallow and I almost vomited and it took forever to get that foul taste out of my mouth.

What now? I have depression but what's worse is I have anxiety and panic attacks and the Prozac keeps my anxiety under control.

I'm calling my PCP tomorrow to see what she recommends but when I will be able to swallow my Prozac again?

I take effexor and so far I have not had a prob. swallowing. I have heard many times to put the powder in applesauce. I have so many ?s to ask u about prozac and anxiety. I know it works for depression just so worried it would put me over the edge on anxiety I have constant anxiety it never stops I am fine on my meds. but should change. I do not know if u know about effexor or not but I do need to get off eventually. Please keep in touch.

I tried Effexor and it actually made my anxiety worse. I have a form of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that causes my anxiety and the Prozac keeps it completely in check for me.

I tried this and it was nasty also. Turns out they make Prozac in liquid form but my insurance won't cover it and it's $200 for a 30 day supply:( I only pay $4.00 for my capsules. I guess I'll back to Lexapro for now until I'm able to swallow good again.

Hi Amanda,

I'm not on Prozac but another anti-depressant. My surgeon let me take my capsule the day after surgery and I must say she is very cautious! She told me that it will just sit in my new small pouch and be absorbed.

I was extremely apprehensive to take it the first day but had absolutely no problems at all !

Good luck!

Paula

I take prozac too - it IS nasty. All that white powder just sticks to your tongue. It is bitter and slimy. Eeew. But I need it. So, I better shut up and take it as a grown up. There! I said it!

I take a 40mg and 20mg pill every day and swallow and have no issues. just use enough Water to wash it down. I am able to take all my pills, my doctor said if you can't take an average sized pill there is an issue. but that is my doctor and my experience...

I also tried it in applesauce and thought I would throw up! In fact just thinking about it again makes me queasy. Today I mixed the powder with a tablespoon of honey and was pleasantly surprised. It wasn't perfect but sooo much better than applesauce. The only thing I don't know (because I haven't been banded yet) is whether or not honey can be easily swallowed after banding.

I swallow it with no problem. My surgeon said it was fine. since it's a capsule if it does get "stuck" it will dissolve quick enough not to cause any problems. If it was a tablet that size he said may be too big. I swallow a couple of sips of Water before and after I take the capsule.

I wish I had something positive to add to this thread but I don't. I was on Effexor before surgery and since surgery everytime I try to take it I get so nauseous that I throw up. Right now I am completly off meds.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
